Discover Mezzana: river, trails and local history
Accommodation in Mezzana
Mezzana combines river sports on the Noce, trails through woodland and local history with seasonal winter sports. To plan your trip, you can first choose according to your preferred focus: one circular route leads to a waterfall and a hamlet, while other paths run alongside the river or through the woods. Historic buildings stand in the old town centre; winter sports and sports facilities add seasonal activities to the range of options.
Getting here and finding your way around
The Trento–Malè–Mezzana railway connects Mezzana with Trento and runs through the Adige Valley, the Rotaliana Plain, the Non Valley and the Sulz Valley. Check the timetable before travelling. In the village, the Zona Centro Sportivo–Ortiöi walking route on the right bank of the Noce can be continued over a footbridge to Mezzana station and the Palazzetto dello Sport. The tourist information office is at Via IV Novembre 77. Since office details and seasonal opening hours may change, it is advisable to check the opening hours before visiting.
River and trails around Mezzana
River sports take place on the Noce in the Mezzana section. Centro XRaft Avventure Outdoor is located at the Centro Sportivo di Mezzana; check the location before booking. This allows you to consider river activities and trails in the village as different options, without assuming they follow the same route.
A moderately difficult circular route starts in the village centre, leads to the Cascata di Mezzana and the hamlet of Castello at an altitude of 1,283 metres, and returns via Claiano. Another route leads through the woods to the Laghi del Malghet di Mezzana. The Peace Cross on Cima Gardenè can be seen along this route. Conditions on these mountain trails can change; check them before setting out.
The Val di Sole cycling and walking path is 35 kilometres long, follows the Noce stream and passes Mezzana. In terms of stated route length, it therefore differs from the circular route, whose description focuses mainly on difficulty, destinations and altitude. Different specific features are therefore relevant when choosing between the routes: length, course, starting point and the destinations mentioned.
The old town and its architectural history
In the old town centre, the parish church of Santi Pietro e Paolo stands right next to the Madonna di Caravaggio church. Casa Maturi is a 16th-century residence associated with the local history. The church of San Cristoforo in Ortisé was already there in the 15th century. The San Rocco cemetery chapel stands on the road from Ortisé to Menas and is mentioned in 16th-century documents. These different dates highlight distinct aspects of the past: for San Cristoforo, they refer to the church’s existence; for San Rocco, to its mention in documents.
The Segheria di Ortisè e Menas also offers a specific insight into historic technology. The restored Venetian sawmill is still in operation and is powered by a water wheel. Visitors can explore four levels, including the area where logs are brought in and products are made, faithful reproductions of mechanical components, and the turbine. The layout thus combines the sawmill’s function with the mechanical parts that enable it to operate.
Winter sports and sports facilities
The Folgarida–Marilleva ski link, together with Madonna di Campiglio and Pinzolo, provides access to a ski area with more than 150 kilometres of slopes. Skiing is seasonal. In winter, the Centro sportivo comunale di Mezzana offers a natural ice rink and a 7.5-kilometre cross-country ski trail. Since seasonal availability may change, check the current situation in advance.
The sports centre also has two uncovered tennis courts with synthetic surfaces and a stand for around 200 people, as well as three bocce courts. The information distinguishes between the winter offerings—the ice rink and cross-country ski trail—and the other sports facilities. If you are planning activities at the sports centre, this can help you choose the right sport and season.
