Peio: History, Remembrance and Nature Trails
Accommodation in Peio
In Peio, you can explore local history, memorial sites and nature themes in different ways. When planning your trip, consider whether you are especially interested in the legacy of the First World War, historic architecture, or trails that interpret the natural environment. Options range from a museum collection and memorial sites to walks and themed trails.
Museum and World War I Memorial Sites
The museum “Pejo 1914–1918. The War at the Door” displays uniforms and personal belongings, as well as a field kitchen and the container of a cableway at Punta Linke. Other exhibits include a first-aid hut, a tabernacle used in the trenches, and a portable altar. Alongside personal belongings, you will find objects from everyday life and wartime supply operations.
Together with Stelvio National Park, the museum hosts information evenings and excursions to First World War sites. Individual programs may vary; if you have a particular date in mind, check the latest program details. A memorial service for the fallen is also held every year in early September at the former San Rocco cemetery. Check the exact program dates before your trip.
Punta Linke is a First World War memorial site and is probably one of the highest memorial sites in Europe. There is a visitor trail, and the site is open to the public in summer. From Peio, access is via SAT Trail No. 105. This climbs from Doss dei Cembri, at 2,300 meters, to Vioz Mantova mountain hut. Doss dei Cembri is accessible by cable cars. Check the current opening arrangements for Punta Linke and the operating schedules of the cable cars and mountain hut separately.
Another memorial site is the nearby Austrian Fort Barbadifior, which you can visit on an easy walk. The fort was built at an altitude of 1,600 meters and used as a barracks during the First World War. Unlike the museum, with its exhibits, here you encounter a building whose history is linked to military use.
Architecture and History in Peio Paese
At the bell tower of San Giorgio in Peio Paese, the current structure of the monumental complex dates from the late 15th century. The bell tower itself was built between 1480 and 1483 by craftspeople from Como and Val Camonica. A restored figure of Saint Christopher, about seven meters high, is also located at San Giorgio. The brothers Giovanni and Battista Baschenis of Averaria created it shortly after the building was constructed. The Church of Santi Giorgio e Lazzaro has five altars.
San Rocco Hill is another landmark in the history of the town: Peio Paese lies in a hollow dominated by this hill. Archaeological finds dating to the Gallic, Celtic or Rhaetian period were discovered there in 1885. They provide evidence of human presence in the distant past. Those interested in the history of the town will find a different perspective here than at the museum: the focus is on early traces of human settlement and the town’s historic character.
Nature Themes and Trails
At Malga Talè, a themed trail focuses on alpine grouse and their complex strategies for adapting to the environment. The Capercaillie Forest offers a different way to explore nature: an easy walk leads there from Peio Paese. Along the way, you can learn about the lives of wild birds and how they adapt to their surroundings. The two experiences have different emphases: the trail at Malga Talè focuses specifically on alpine grouse, while the walk to the Capercaillie Forest explores the lives of wild birds.
There is a separate seasonal route description for ski mountaineering: the descent follows the Tarlenta piste and passes through the hamlet of Covel on the way back to Peio. Piste and snow conditions can change; check conditions for your planned date.
The focus of your planned activities can help you choose a hotel in Peio. The museum, excursions and memorial sites appeal to different interests than historic architecture or nature trails. If you want to combine several of these themes, pay particular attention when planning to the seasonal accessibility of Punta Linke and the varying schedules of information evenings and excursions.
