Pracorno: Church Art and Hiking Trails in Val di Rabbi
Accommodation in Pracorno
Pracorno brings together cultural history and a range of hiking options. The Church of Madonna di Caravaggio is part of the village’s history; Molino Ruatti has seasonal visiting arrangements. Hiking options range from a flat circular route through small hamlets to mountain trails with named alpine pasture destinations. Coming from Malé, you reach Pracorno as the first village in Val di Rabbi. For planning, it is useful to consider cultural sites and trails according to their different characteristics.
Church of Madonna di Caravaggio
The Church of Madonna di Caravaggio was built between 1846 and 1850. It houses an 18th-century canvas depicting the Madonna di Caravaggio. Around 1937, Agostino Aldi frescoed the apse with scenes from the life of Mary. Their juxtaposition highlights the time elapsed between the canvas, the building and the frescoes; the artistic forms also differ, with painting on canvas contrasted with the frescoes in the apse. In terms of subject matter, the canvas depicts the Madonna di Caravaggio, while the wall paintings portray scenes from Mary’s life.
Planning a visit to Molino Ruatti
Molino Ruatti has seasonal visiting arrangements: outside the stated summer period, it is open by prior arrangement. If you plan to visit outside this period, arrange your visit in advance and take this into account when planning your day.
Hiking between village routes and alpine pasture destinations
When choosing a trail, consider its starting point, route and destination. The “La Lec di Malé e Pracorno” route is a flat circular trail from Molino Ruatti to Località Pozze, passing through Pracorno’s small hamlets. It differs clearly from the routes to the alpine pastures. “Cima Lac e Malga Mondent” starts in Pracorno, follows the road to Ingenga and reaches Malga Mondent Bassa first, followed by Malga Mondent Alta. The route to Malga Cortinga Alta, by contrast, starts at Masi di Zora above Pracorno. From there, it passes through Stelvio National Park to Malga Cortinga Alta, passing close to Malga Mondent Bassa and Alta. The two routes are easy to distinguish by their relationship to the Mondent alpine pastures: the first reaches them one after the other; the second passes close to them and has a different destination, Malga Cortinga Alta. Conditions on both mountain trails depend on the weather. Check conditions before setting out and take the weather into account when planning your day.
For travel planning, there are two different things to check in advance: outside the stated summer period, Molino Ruatti is open by prior arrangement; conditions on the mountain trails depend on the weather. Take the advance arrangement into account when scheduling your visit and the weather when planning your hike.
Location and landscape
Pracorno lies on the left bank of the Rabbies, viewed downstream, and is characterized by terraced fields. “Left bank” refers to the left-hand side when facing downstream along the Rabbies, clarifying the village’s location. Coming from Malé, Pracorno is the first village in Val di Rabbi.
