Among the themes that define Predazzo are the history of Nordic skiing, the geology of its basin landscape and the architectural history of the town. These highlights offer different starting points for planning your trip: from learning about significant sporting events and geological features to visiting churches and exploring nearby trails.

Predazzo and Nordic skiing

The Predazzo Ski Jumping Stadium hosted the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in 1991, 2003 and 2013. These three events place Predazzo in the history of this international sporting competition.

A landscape with a geological history

Predazzo lies in a basin landscape shaped by ancient volcanic and glacial processes. Because of its high concentration of geological varieties, the town is known as the “Geological Garden of the Alps.” This gives the geological perspective on Predazzo a concrete connection to the landscape, rather than just to individual exhibits.

The Doss Capèl geological trail between Passo Feudo and Alpe di Pampeago lies at elevations of between 2,000 and 2,200 metres. Along the route, you can see marine fossils, as well as lava, ash and lapilli from the ancient volcano of Predazzo. These rocks and fossils bring different geological traces into focus along the trail.

Local history and the museum

The Museo Geologico delle Dolomiti is located on Predazzo’s central square. It was inaugurated in 1899 and reopened in 2015 with a modern, interactive exhibition after extensive renovation. The museum thus brings together a long institutional history and a newly designed exhibition. Guided visits can be booked by calling 0462 500366 or emailing museo.predazzo@muse.it. Check the current booking options before your visit.

The churches also give the historic centre a sense of its place in time. The neo-Gothic church of Santi Filippo e Giacomo was built in 1870 and shapes the townscape of the historic centre. The church of S. Nicolò dates back to the 16th century and is the oldest church in Predazzo. Together, these buildings point to different periods in the town’s history.

Walks and nature watching

The Passeggiata lungo Avisio is a walk of about 30 to 45 minutes. The route is suitable for all ages and for strollers; seasonal conditions may affect the experience. Another walking trail around Predazzo leads to the Sottosassa gorge. There, you can see the Travignolo waterfalls beneath porphyry walls equipped for sport climbing.

Further afield from Predazzo, the Centro visitatori di Paneveggio is located on the road from Predazzo to Passo Rolle, in the middle of the spruce forest known as the Foresta dei Violini. The Sentiero Marciò starts near the visitor centre. This nature trail has guided and illustrated observation points. Also near the centre, a large enclosure allows visitors to observe a group of large ungulates at close range.

At the visitor centre, the “Suona Foresta” installation explains the surrounding forest, which is known for its resonance wood. The centre’s visit thus focuses on the forest landscape and its importance as a resonance wood area.

Cycling route, Biolago and other interests

On the return leg, the Easy Bike Ring – rosso follows the historic Dolomites cycle route through the green meadows of the Predazzo countryside. From there, the route offers views of the Latemar Dolomites and leads to the Biolago. This natural swimming pond opened to the public in August 2020. Its water comes from a drinking-water well and a mountain stream; plants and microorganisms in special pools clean it. As operating details may change with the seasons, check them if you are planning a visit to the Biolago.

For a different focus during your stay, consider the mini-golf course in Predazzo. It is easy to reach and has a large car park; confirm practical details again before you travel. The Festa di San Giacomo takes place every year and includes a market and an event day open to residents, families and tourists. The programme varies from year to year, so it is worth checking the dates in advance.

The local cheese tradition offers another connection to the area: Puzzone di Moena is the main product of the Caseificio Sociale di Predazzo e Moena dairy and is still made according to the original recipe. The history of winter sports, geological themes, local culture and nature trails offer different perspectives on Predazzo.
