Prissian: History, Vine and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Prissian
Prissian offers historic buildings, hiking trails and regional cultural attractions to help you plan your stay. If you are looking for a hotel in Prissian, you can consider which of these interests you want to shape your stay: the history of St. Martin’s Church, paths through the forest or the Versoaln vine at Castel Katzenzungen.
Hiking trails with different route details
The Vorbichl Experience Trail is a circular hiking trail through the forest, about 1.5 km long. It follows wide forest paths and returns to the “Löschteich” (fire pond). Several stations and information boards focus on the history and nature of Vorbichl. There are also several picnic areas along the trail where you can stop and relax.
Another route description is titled “Katzenzungen Castle with the Versoaln Vine and the Red Trail.” It starts at public car park No. 4 in the village centre of Prissian and follows trail marker No. 17 over an old stone bridge with a wooden roof. After about 500 m on the pavement, you reach St. Martin’s Church. The paved road then leads downhill to Castel Katzenzungen, before the route follows trail marker No. 17 again.
When comparing route lengths, it is important to note that the approximately 1.5 km at Vorbichl is the length of the circular trail. The approximately 500 m on the route following marker No. 17 refers to the section up to the church, not the entire hike.
The church and stone bridge in the village landscape
The history of St. Martin’s Church probably goes back further than its first documentary mention in 1380: Goswin recorded it as already existing in 1159 in his Marienberg Chronicle. Around 1630, the church took on its present form. The altar was later renovated and furnished with a painting by Baroque artist Stefan Kessler.
The historic stone bridge in the centre also has its own name: locally, it is called “Stuanbogen” and was first mentioned in 1308. The bridge is another point of historical interest alongside the church and Castel Katzenzungen.
Castel Katzenzungen and the Versoaln vine
Castel Katzenzungen was first mentioned in a document in 1244, which names Henricus de Cazenzunge as its owner. The indigenous Versoaln vine, which is over 360 years old, grows on the castle’s north-facing slope. Its traditional pergola, made of chestnut wood, has a canopy area of 300 m².
On request, you can book an experience that includes a guided tour of Castel Katzenzungen, the Versoaln vine and the owner’s collection. The collection includes works by significant South Tyrolean artists of the recent past, fossils and petrified wood; an aperitif is served afterwards. Guided tours are regularly held by appointment at the Großkemat winery in Prissian. Confirm the arrangements in advance.
The ruins of Casatsch Pfeffersburg offer a wonderful view of the Adige Valley.
Regional chestnut days and Kneipp activities
The KESCHTNRIGGL Chestnut Days have been held every year in late autumn since 1998 in Tisens-Prissian, Völlan and Lana. They offer insights into the region’s culture and customs, as well as the chestnut and its importance to local residents. During the Chestnut Days, participating restaurants serve traditional and modern chestnut dishes. As the programme is seasonal, it is advisable to check the current event dates and programme before travelling.
Water treatments and their invigorating effects are at the heart of the Kneipp health facility in Prissian. Guided tours offer tips on the health teachings of Father Kneipp, including as part of a Kneipp coffee gathering. If you are planning a guided tour, check the current options in advance.
