Ragoli – Hiking and Cultural History
Accommodation in Ragoli
Ragoli lies on the left bank of the Sarca River, at the foot of 1,864-metre-high Monte Irón. The village is located at the entrance to Val d'Algone, which is the main access route to Adamello-Brenta Nature Park from the southeast. Ragoli itself is also one of the routes into the nature park. Alongside its scenery, trails, churches and historical traces are among the features that shape a stay in Ragoli.
Hiking between meadows and the lake
The easy “In Vino Veritas” trail is 3 km long, has an elevation gain of 170 metres and takes 1 hour and 15 minutes. It runs along the edge of Ragoli’s upper meadows, crosses fields where grapes were once grown and eventually reaches the artificial Ponte Pià lake. The distance, elevation gain and duration provide a practical basis for planning the hike. Check local trail conditions before setting out.
The Senter da l'Acqua trail offers a different connection between landscape and the past. It starts in Vigo di Ragoli, behind the historic Casa Rusca, and combines nature experiences with fragments of real history. The two trails described here therefore differ in more than their routes: In Vino Veritas features the upper meadows, the fields’ former use for winegrowing and Ponte Pià lake as its notable stops; the Senter da l'Acqua is centred on the connection between nature and historical events.
Churches and art in Ragoli
The old church of Saints Faustino and Giovita is first mentioned in a document from 1249. Its presbytery and apse contain an important fresco cycle dated to the late 1500s’ first decade. The frescoes are attributed to Cristoforo II Baschenis, with the participation of his son Simone. The church is thought to have served as the church for the entire community of Preore.
The present-day parish church of San Faustino was built in the second half of the 18th century. Bishop Giovanni Nepomuceno de Tschiderer consecrated it on 24 August 1837. The cemetery chapel is also part of the local artistic heritage: it contains important paintings by the Baschenis family. Together, these religious buildings and artworks illustrate different aspects of the village’s religious history.
Local history and historical traces
Numerous graffiti and frescoes can be found on the exterior walls of houses in Ragoli. The village’s history is also linked to black marble: in the 19th century, Ragoli was known for its quarries, where large blocks were extracted. A black marble plaque dating from 1496 recalls, in its inscription, the feudal grant of the right to collect tithes to the community of Preore.
The history of the community is also rooted in Vigo. Historical assemblies of the public Regole of the community of Preore were held near the bell tower built there. The hamlet of Irone preserves old rural buildings with typical Alpine features, including the medieval church of San Giacomo Maggiore. Irone was abandoned after plague epidemics, including the one in 1630.
