Discover Romeno: Church Art and Cycling Routes
Accommodation in Romeno
Romeno offers visitors a range of things to explore: church art, walking trails through pine forests and cycling routes in the Alta Val di Non. There are also views of the Brenta Dolomites and local cultural history. If you are looking for a hotel in Romeno, these themes can help you tailor your stay to your interests.
Landscape and views
Romeno lies on a sunny plateau surrounded by pine forests. Walking trails run through the woods. At the edge of the town stands the Chiesa dei SS. Bartolomeo e Tommaso, from where you can see the Brenta Dolomites. Both the woodland landscape and views of the Dolomites are among the aspects of the town described here.
Churches, frescoes and art history
The Church of Sant'Antonio Abate is part of the Cammino Jacopeo d'Anaunia, a network of ancient routes and churches associated with pilgrimages. Its exterior and interior fresco cycles depict stories of Saint Anthony the Great. The Church of San Bartolomeo contains some of the oldest frescoes in Trentino: they are Romanesque and Byzantine in character. The two churches therefore offer distinct features—narrative fresco cycles in one, Romanesque wall paintings in the other.
The parish church of Romeno houses the Pala dell'Assunta, a Neoclassical work by Giambattista Lampi with very ancient origins. Frescoes by the famous Mattia Lampi, dating from 1720, are still visible on numerous elegant houses. A monument in Romeno commemorates local-born Giambattista Lampi (1751–1830). These different works and memorials offer several specific ways to explore the town's art history.
Cycling and trails in the countryside
The 25-kilometre Alta Val di Non circular cycling route connects Malgolo, Romeno, Salter, Cavareno, Sarnonico, Ronzone, Malosco and Fondo. It then runs through the meadows of Pradiei on its way back to Romeno. The route can thus be identified by its length, the towns it connects and its stretch through the meadows.
The same cycling network also includes an unpaved mountain bike route between Don and Amblar. It is seven kilometres long, with a total elevation gain of 450 metres. Compared with the 25-kilometre circular route, this mountain bike route is shorter and has the stated elevation gain. These details help distinguish the two route descriptions rather than presenting them as a single route.
Nearby, between Malgolo and Romeno, there is also a distinctive overpass across the SS 43DIR. Its striking structure is made of wood and metal. It is another separate point of interest in the area; no connection with the cycling routes described here is implied.
Local history and event
The Caseificio Sociale Alta Val di Non in Romeno and Cavareno was established in 1891 as a communal dairy operated on a rotating basis. This history complements the religious and artistic themes with a connection to the region's cooperative dairy farming.
The Fiera di San Bartolomeo e Mostra Bovina, held in Romeno on 24 August 2024, featured a traditional street fair and a cattle show at Parco di Alice. If you are planning a stay around this festival, check future dates separately.
