Sover
Accommodation in Sover
If you want to get to know Sover through specific places to visit, there are several options: the “Alpeggi alle pendici del Lagorai” route is described for different seasons, as is the fourth stage of the “Cammino delle terre sospese,” with its distance and elevation gain. Other trails connect named hamlets or lead to a viewpoint. Historic farmsteads, churches and distinctive roof details also shape the themes of a stay.
Hiking routes and views
The “Alpeggi alle pendici del Lagorai” route passes through high-altitude forests and alpine pastures. It runs from just under 1,500 metres at Baita Monte Pat to over 2,000 metres at Monte Cogne. It is suitable for outings on warm summer days as well as for snowshoe hikes in winter. The route starts at Baita Monte Pat, which can be reached from Montesover by car or on foot via SAT 468, and follows SAT 468 to Malga Vernera. From Montesover, a convenient road also leads through dense forest to Malga Vernera, a starting point for many trails in the heart of the Lagorai.
One stage with precisely stated figures is the fourth stage of the “Cammino delle terre sospese,” from Sover to Grumes: it is 12.76 kilometres long, with 667 metres of ascent and 641 metres of descent. Another option is the “Sover e le sue frazioni” trail, which connects Sover, Piscine, Monte Alto and Montesover. You can choose between a stage with specified elevation figures and a trail whose described route takes in several hamlets.
The viewpoints also offer different perspectives on the landscape. From Sover, there is a wide panorama from the western slope of Monte Frattoni, opposite Grauno. From Piscine, a trail climbs through the forest to Maso Monte Alto, a viewpoint with wide-ranging views over the Cembra Valley.
Village character, churches and farmsteads
A number of rustic, stately houses stand along Sover’s main road; some of their façades feature religious frescoes. Traditional roofs are covered with yellow-coloured tiles and terracotta shingles made in the kilns of Molina di Fiemme. Woodworking has been a local tradition in the area around Sover since the 17th century. These details give the village a craft and historical character, distinct from the sights in its forests and pastures.
The churches include S. Lorenzo, with its three Baroque wooden altars, and a church reached from the main road, dedicated to S. Barbara and the Madonna delle Grazie. The latter contains paintings by C. Segatta and Albertini. The two churches offer different points of interest for anyone curious about sacred art and furnishings as well as the trails.
The old farmsteads, or masi, reflect different states of preservation and uses. Maso Pianaci, below Piscine near the Avisio, consists of three old, well-preserved buildings. At Maso Marigiat, two houses are intact and two more are in ruins; the surrounding land, once cultivated with vines and grain, is now overgrown with vegetation. The large rural Maso Castelir, near the Avisio stream, is in ruins. It was abandoned after the Second World War and formerly also served as an inn.
Maria Turismo rurale also combines a welcome for today’s visitors with a history of earlier uses: as far back as 1840, it was a shop with an inn, selling goods for everyday needs and clothing. At Maria Turismo rurale, Renata offers hikers stories, coffee, a place to relax and friendly hospitality; the offering may change. If you plan to visit, check availability in advance.
