Terzolas: Torraccia, Library and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Terzolas
Terzolas lies in the lower Val di Sole and combines a striking landscape setting with architectural and regional history. When planning your trip, you can focus on several highlights: the history of the Palazzo della “Torraccia,” the collections of the historic library, and hikes to destinations of historical or scenic interest. Rafting is also available as a seasonal activity in the Val di Sole. This can help you decide how to fit the village into your trip, depending on whether cultural history, hiking, or an activity in the valley matters most to you.
Landscape along the Noce
Terzolas is located on the left bank of the Noce River, on a wide, gently sloping terrace at the foot of Cima Lac. The peak reaches 2,439 meters. Its sunny location and the apple orchards surrounding Terzolas are also part of the landscape. You can go rafting in the Val di Sole from May to September; confirm seasonal availability locally. The riverbank, terrace, and Cima Lac help locate Terzolas, while the seasonal rafting opportunity is in the Val di Sole.
Torraccia and the historic library
One historic building in Terzolas is the Palazzo della “Torraccia” (Casa Malanotti), built by Francesco Enigler between 1573 and 1579. On the second floor of Palazzo Malanotti, also known as Torraccia, there is a room with a 17th-century fresco frieze. The frieze displays the Malanotti family coats of arms. The construction date and decoration belong to two different periods: the palazzo was built in the late 16th century, while the frescoes date from the following century.
The historic library “Alla Torraccia” is housed in the elegant rooms of Palazzo Malanotti, also known as Torraccia. It preserves various collections relating to the Val di Sole and neighboring areas, as well as a special collection of studies and research on the valley. The library thus broadens the focus from a single building to the valley and its surrounding areas.
Hikes and destinations in the Val di Sole
The hiking destinations also differ clearly. The Sentiero Val di Sole is an easy hike for discovering historic places in the Val di Sole. The moderately difficult trail to Malghetto di Terzolas passes through characteristic farmsteads and deciduous forests, with views over the lower Val di Sole. The trails differ in both difficulty and focus: one is an easy hike to historic places, while the other is a moderately difficult route through farmsteads and woodland, with views of the valley.
At Malghetto di Terzolas, you can watch goats, horses, and donkeys grazing near the site. A branch of the Sentiero Val di Sole leads to the “Sassias” climbing wall in San Giacomo. Another branch above San Giacomo leads to the “sassi coppellati,” rocks with hemispherical depressions. These branches offer different highlights: the climbing wall is a named destination, while the rock formation is characterized by its depressions.
An agricultural cooperative
The Caseificio Comprensoriale Cercen in Terzolas is a cooperative formed by farmers. Alongside architectural and regional history, it offers another local connection: the collective organization of farmers.
