Vattaro: Pear Tradition, Architectural History and Trails
Accommodation in Vattaro
Vattaro lies on a moraine terrace about 700 metres above sea level at the foot of Doss del Bue, surrounded by meadows, forests and old orchards. The landscape, pear traditions and rural history shape the village in different ways. If you are looking for hotels in Vattaro, you can explore its distinctive features according to the themes that appeal to you: fruit growing and local events, historic architectural styles, or trails with different focuses.
Pear Traditions and Local Flavours
The Festa della Pera is considered one of Vattaro’s most representative events. It celebrates pears as well as local flavours, traditions and knowledge, and includes tastings, markets, music and cultural contributions. The festival therefore combines culinary themes with other aspects of local customs. If you would like to plan your trip around the Festa, check the event dates before booking.
The Parco delle Pere was created in 2012 as a small field planted with fruit varieties that had been widespread in the area many years earlier. This gives the pear tradition a landscape dimension as well: the field recalls older fruit varieties once common in the area.
A programme description from 2014 mentions a food workshop in which pear-based dishes and desserts were explained, prepared and sampled, including Torte de peri. It also lists a walk from the centre of Vattaro to the Parco delle Pere, intended to introduce visitors to the pear. These examples show different ways of exploring the subject: a workshop involving preparation and tasting on the one hand, and a walk from the centre to the pear field on the other.
Palace and Rural History
Palazzo Bortolazzi is a historic palace dating from the late 17th century. Its architectural features include a cylindrical turret and a row of loopholes below the top of the tower. The palace contains frescoes by Erasmo Antonio Obermuller depicting rural life. The architecture and frescoes offer different points of interest: the palace can be understood through both its exterior design and the scenes depicted inside.
The caradori are also part of the history of rural work. These carters came from Vattaro, travelled between Trento and Feltre, and sold fruit and wood. Their work adds concrete goods and trade routes of the time to depictions of rural life. The village’s history thus includes both scenes of rural life in art and the work of the carters.
Themed Trails and Different Routes
The themed trails in Vattaro focus on history, the senses, food or physical activity. They also vary in how you travel: themed trails can be explored on horseback or by Nordic walking; mountain bike routes are also available. To help you choose, consider two questions: which theme appeals to you, and which of these ways of getting around interests you?
You can also cover the 60 km della Vigolana from Vattaro. This discovery route across the Altopiano della Vigolana starts in Vattaro at Villa Bortolazzi and the adjoining chapel dedicated to Saints Rocco and Sebastiano. It continues on to Vigolo Vattaro. Unlike the themed trails, which are defined by their subject or mode of travel, this route is described by its starting point at the villa and chapel.
