Verla: Wine, History and Walking Trails
Accommodation in Verla
Verla brings together wine, local history and outdoor activities with a recurring cultural tradition. Villa Corniole, two sacred buildings from different periods, walks through vineyard landscapes and the Festa dell'Uva give the choice of destination several distinct highlights. Whether wine tasting, architectural history, a particular walking distance or the festival programme is your main priority depends on your travel interests.
Wine Tastings at Villa Corniole
Villa Corniole in Verla offers wine tastings and cellar tours in Italian and English by reservation. Tastings may include Müller-Thurgau and Trento DOC wines in a cellar carved into porphyry rock or on a terrace overlooking the surrounding vineyards. Check the latest details before your visit, as operational arrangements may change.
Churches and Local History
The old parish church of Santa Maria Assunta in Verla existed before the year 1000. The small Madonna dell'Aiuto chapel was built between 1724 and 1733 to provide the local population with a place of worship. It is also popularly known as Sant'Antonio (Abate). It stands in a small square within Verla di Giovo, on the old road that connected the town with Val di Cembra. The two buildings thus point to markedly different historical periods.
Walks Through Vineyards and Woods
The Marcia dell'Uva is a walk along the striking vineyard terraces of Val di Cembra. The event includes two routes of 5 or 10 km. They pass among the vineyards' characteristic dry-stone walls, historic villages, old chapels, farmsteads and woods. Refreshment stops offer autumnal food products from Val di Cembra. Event details may change; check the information for the relevant edition before taking part.
Near Verla, the Sentiero del Mancabrot e del Lac de Montesel circular trail starts and ends at the community centre in Valternigo, Giovo. It follows the pine-covered Mancabrot ridge and reaches the Lac de Montesel wetland in Bosco Maric, at an altitude of 812 m. The two trails have different focuses: the Marcia is defined by vineyard terraces, villages and the choice between 5 and 10 km; the Sentiero by its pine-covered ridge and wetland. Weather and maintenance can affect trail conditions; check them before setting out.
Festa dell'Uva in Verla di Giovo
The Festa dell'Uva in Verla di Giovo is a cultural tradition deeply rooted in the lives of the residents of the municipality of Giovo and the entire Val di Cembra. For more than half a century, a colourful parade featuring numerous allegorical floats has made its way through the town's streets every year. During the Festa, the Villaggio Centrale serves local menus, traditional dishes, wines, sparkling wines, desserts and specialities from Trentino. The food on offer varies by edition and may change. If you are planning your stay around the festival, check the dates for the relevant edition.
