Chiarone Scalo offers a way to plan a trip around nature, the coast and culture. Key themes include a flat coastal landscape protected by a dune system, nature observation at Lago di Burano, a cycling route and historic buildings. These highlights draw attention to different aspects of the surrounding area: the landscape and observation points, routes along the sea and lake, and architecture and past uses.

Landscape and nature observation

Le Dune del Chiarone is a flat coastal area protected by a dune system. The WWF Oasis of Lago di Burano lies in the southern Maremma, between Ansedonia and Chiarone in the municipality of Capalbio. Its nature trail runs along the dune and includes seven observation points: six hides and an observation tower. This brings together different aspects of nature: the dunes define the coastal landscape, while the trail focuses on observation points along a dune. This distinction can help you choose between enjoying the scenery and focusing on a specific nature-observation experience when planning your trip.

Cycling route and coastal connections

The cycling route “Itinerario tra Orbetello e la Costa d’Argento” reaches Chiarone Scalo and passes through the railway underpass there to the SP Litoranea. The route runs along the sea and Lago di Burano. Another route, “Capalbio e i tesori della Costa d'Argento”, passes through a new underpass in Chiarone Scalo on its way back to the Litoranea provincial road. The first is explicitly a cycling route with links to the coast and lake; for the second, the return to the Litoranea is the notable route detail.

Beach and coast

Ultimaspiaggia beach resort is located in LocalitĂ  Chiarone Marina in Capalbio. Its beach features light-coloured sand and extends to the nature reserve and the WWF Oasis of Lago di Burano. This specific beach setting adds another coastal theme to the flat dune landscape.

Buildings, history and art

Torre di Buranaccio stands on a coastal tombolo that separates the sea from the wetland. The tower has a square floor plan and walls two to three metres thick. Its location and dimensions offer different insights: the tombolo describes its position between the sea and wetland, while the floor plan and wall thickness give a more specific picture of its construction. The wall thickness is a tangible indication of scale which, together with the square floor plan, conveys the tower’s architectural character.

Palazzo del Chiarone is located in the village of Chiarone on Via Aurelia. In earlier centuries, it served as a customs post for traffic between two states. Its former function offers a different historical focus from the location and construction of the Torre.

In the region around Chiarone Scalo, Giardino dei Tarocchi is located in Garavicchio. It was created by artist Niki de Saint Phalle and adds an artistic dimension to the historical and architectural themes. Trip planning can therefore bring together a range of interests: nature observation and coastal landscapes, a cycling route, historical function and artistic creation.
