Discover Veneto: culture, nature and special places
Accommodation in Veneto
Veneto can be discovered through a wide variety of impressions: from historic cities and significant buildings to hiking trails, river landscapes and regional traditions. As you plan your trip, you can start by considering which themes interest you most. The region’s places and experiences offer concrete points of reference—whether you’re interested in architecture, observing nature or getting to know Veneto through its cultural characteristics.
Art, architectural history and historic cities
Vicenza and Veneto are closely associated with Palladio’s works. Inspired by classical architecture, his style is notable for its exceptional clarity and influenced architecture and urban planning in Europe and around the world. In Verona, Roman city gates and Renaissance bastions tell the story of this fortified city. Over some 2,000 years, the Roman era, Romanesque period, Middle Ages and Renaissance have all left their mark; elements from these periods remained until the 19th century.
The Verona Arena also offers a glimpse into the Roman past: the amphitheatre was built around the middle of the 1st century AD. At the same time, it remains a venue for performances and the Verona Opera Festival; program dates may vary. In summer, the traditional Estate Teatrale Veronese Shakespeare Festival takes place at the Roman Theatre. If you’d like to plan your trip around a performance, check the relevant event dates.
Venice and its lagoon are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city’s cultural landmarks include St. Mark’s Square with its basilica and Doge’s Palace, the Bridge of Sighs, the Rialto district and the Grand Canal. Venice lies on an archipelago of 118 islands criss-crossed by 150 canals and connected by more than 400 bridges; gondolas are a defining feature of local transport. Burano is known for its colorful houses and lace-making, while Murano is famous for its artistic glassmaking. The islands complement the city with two distinct craft traditions.
Botany and cultural heritage in Padua
The Botanical Garden of Padua was established in 1545 and is considered the oldest surviving university botanical garden of its kind. Its original circular layout has been preserved to this day: a water-filled moat surrounds the central flowerbed. The garden showcases 3,500 plant species from around the world; the collection may change. Its historic design and botanical diversity sit side by side. You can explore it on a guided tour or independently with an audio guide included in the admission price. As ticket arrangements may change, check the latest information before your visit.
The Dolomites, trails and nature watching
The Belluno Dolomites National Park is traversed by Alta Via hiking trails No. 1 and No. 2, as well as a network of more than 200 kilometers of CAI hiking trails. The network includes 52 CAI trails and five via ferratas. Nature trails introduce visitors to local flora, vegetation, fauna and geology. Themed trails focus on other subjects: history, archaeology, traditional human activities and geomorphology. These trails therefore lead not only through the landscape, but also to the different themes connected with it.
The Po Delta Park offers a different natural setting. Cycling excursions are possible there along embankments beside the six branches of the Po Delta. The CĂ Mello and CĂ Pisani oases have hidden observation points for birdwatching and nature photography. Boat and canoe trips are also available. Since 2015, the Po Delta has been recognized as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve under the MAB Programme. Those interested in nature and landscapes can experience it from different perspectives, from cycling along the embankments to quietly observing and photographing the surroundings.
Regional experiences and trip planning
Near Treviso, the Prosecco Hills offer wine tastings, walks through vineyards and scenic routes. On the Asiago Plateau and in the Seven Municipalities, regional offerings include food stops featuring alpine cheese, honey and mountain spirits. The Riviera del Brenta can be explored on a river trip. These examples give you different ways to get to know Veneto through its landscapes, food and drink, outdoor activities or architecture.
When searching for a hotel in Veneto, you can start with your personal travel priorities: would you like to focus on historic places and architectural history, are you especially interested in trails and nature watching, or are you drawn to wine, regional products and river trips?
