Discover Sarmede: Illustration, History and Hiking Trails

Illustration and changing exhibitions

The Casa della Fantasia is a multifunctional center for illustration and books and is also home to the Fondazione Štěpán Zavřel. Every year from November to February, it hosts a new edition of the international children’s illustration exhibition “Le Immagini della Fantasia.” From March to September, it also presents the exhibition “Il Sole ritrovato. L’illustrazione del secondo ’900 a Sarmede.” These two time periods are quite distinct and can therefore play a role when planning a stay.

The 43rd exhibition, “Le Immagini della Fantasia,” shows how extensive an edition can be: it ran from November 8, 2025, to February 15, 2026, featured more than 200 original works, and was titled “Natura e Visioni.” It was curated by Silvia Paccassoni. This particular edition is one example from the program; if you are planning a trip to see an exhibition, it is worth checking the dates for your chosen travel period.

Sarmede’s outdoor murals and the Štěpán Zavřel Museum are also among the Fondazione’s areas of interest. On request, it offers Italian-language tours for school groups of all ages. Churches and historical connections

The Church of Sant’Antonio in Sarmede was built in the Baroque style in the early 19th century. At the Church of San Giorgio in Rugolo, the Lombards spread the cult of this eastern martyr in the West. The first church was probably built during their rule in the 6th or 7th century. The date refers to the first church and is reported as a possibility, not as a confirmed date for the present-day church.

Trails with their own history and views

The historic Sentiero Pagnoca trail is about 4.6 kilometers long, with around 560 meters of elevation gain. It follows the route taken by the partisans of Montaner on their first ascent to Col Alt in the Cansiglio on March 26, 1944. The trail’s length, elevation gain and historical context offer several distinct aspects to consider when choosing a hike.

Another historic trail is the Sentiero del Santo. It begins in Borgo Martin and follows a mule track lined with dry-stone walls. In the past, this route was used to transport hay and wood down to the valley. The Montaner–Cal De Zot–Le Scaffe hiking trail begins north of Montaner at an elevation of 330 meters and follows a path protected by dry-stone walls. The descriptions thus highlight both the former use of one trail and the structural features of the trails.

The Strada del Patriarca leads to Monte Castelir. There, a viewpoint looks out over the Monte Cesen–Col Visentin mountain range, Monte Pizzoc, Montello and Castello di Cordignano. If your travel plans include trails and views as well as culture, you can take these different described highlights into account without combining them into a single outing.

Bus routes 301 and 302 connect Sarmede with Vittorio Veneto from Monday to Saturday. Before travelling, check the timetable for the specific day of the week, as schedules may change.
