The Cayman Islands offer a variety of ways to plan your trip: observe nature, explore trails, enjoy water sports or visit historic sites. Outdoor activities on Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac and Little Cayman include hiking, cycling, cave visits and golf. On Grand Cayman, the experiences described range from nature reserves and the Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park to Seven Mile Beach. Local crafts and cultural history are also part of the islands’ character.

Observe nature and explore trails

Ten of the 28 orchid species recorded in the Cayman Islands are found in Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park; four of them are endemic. These figures may change as future surveys are conducted. The lake in the park is about three acres in size and changes over the course of the year: it fills during the rainy season and can almost dry up at other times. It serves as a wildlife refuge and is a popular place for wildlife enthusiasts and birdwatchers to take photographs. In the Lake and Wetland area, visitors can observe native Cayman Islands birds and numerous migratory species. Sightings vary by season.

The Mastic Trail runs for 2.3 miles through the 834-acre Mastic Reserve on Grand Cayman. If you would like to explore the trail on a guided tour, check the current arrangements before your trip. Also on Grand Cayman is Colliers Wilderness Reserve, a 190-acre protected area in East End. These two places offer different ways to connect with nature: a trail through a named reserve and a designated protected area.

The Blue Iguana Habitat is located along the Woodland Trail in the Botanic Park and is the center of the National Trust’s Blue Iguana Conservation Programme. Blue Iguana Conservation tours are suitable for all ages and can be booked on request. Check arrangements with the provider in advance. The visitor center is a two-story building in the Caymanian style, with a wide veranda. A free park map is available in the gift shop; check whether it is available before your visit.

Beach and waterside experiences

Seven Mile Beach on Grand Cayman is known for its soft white sand, crystal-clear water and relaxed island atmosphere. Activities offered there include snorkeling, stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking and jet skiing. Water sports equipment can be rented directly on the beach; check current availability. Depending on your interests, you can combine a beach day with a leisurely paddle or motorized water sports, without having to commit to just one activity.

Culture, history and local art

Pedro St. James offers a restored glimpse into the Cayman Islands’ 18th-century heritage. Visitors can walk through the Great House and see historic furnishings and authentic artifacts. The Mission House in Bodden Town on Grand Cayman was one of the island’s first great houses. Both places provide a connection to history, but in different ways: Pedro St. James through its restored Great House and furnishings, and the Mission House as a historic great house.

In George Town, visitors can meet local artisans at the Cayman Craft Market, where Caymanian art and crafts are on display. Items include locally made silver thatch hats and bags, wood carvings and paintings; the selection may vary. On Cayman Brac, the Cayman Brac Museum sells souvenirs, and its selection may also change. Cayfest adds another cultural event: an annual month-long celebration of visual, performing and literary arts and crafts. Check the dates for the relevant year.

Hell combines a striking landscape with a visitor attraction: it is a rugged outcrop of blackened limestone in the West Bay district on Grand Cayman. At the Hell Geological Site, visitors can take a photo with the “Devil” figure found there; the display may change.

Choose the right area for your trip

When choosing a hotel, it helps to decide in advance what you want to focus on during your trip: the beach and water sports, nature observation and hiking trails, or culture and history. The places mentioned are in different locations, so take your planned excursions into account when choosing an island and area.
