In Kyrgyzstan’s Osh Region, sacred sites and Silk Road heritage shape the travel experience as much as the high-mountain landscapes. Osh and Uzgen offer different historical perspectives, while the Alay District brings passes, valleys, and natural attractions into focus.

Sulaiman-Too: Sacred Mountain and Silk Road Heritage

Sulaiman-Too has been revered as a sacred mountain for more than 1,500 years. It dominates the Fergana Valley and forms a backdrop to Osh; it also lies along important Central Asian Silk Road routes. Its five peaks and slopes are home to ancient places of worship, caves with petroglyphs, and two largely reconstructed 16th-century mosques. A total of 101 petroglyph sites have been recorded on the mountain, and 17 places of worship are still in use. Footpaths connect places of worship around the peaks. Here, archaeological traces meet religious sites that are still in use today.

Museums and Early History in Osh

The Sulaiman-Too National Historical and Archaeological Museum Complex covers the geology and geography of the south, its flora and fauna, history, and ethnography, and preserves historical and cultural artifacts. A museum in a cave complex in Osh is dedicated to the religions and beliefs that existed in southern Kyrgyzstan over more than 3,000 years, including pre-Islamic Kyrgyz beliefs. On the southern edge of the city, an ancient pre-Arab settlement preserves parts of a fortification with walls and towers. Its history spans from the 3rd century BCE to the 8th century CE.

Uzgen: Architecture Spanning Several Centuries

Uzgen was a Silk Road crossroads where political, economic, trade, and cultural connections developed from antiquity through the Middle Ages and into the modern era. The architectural complex consists of three mausoleums made of fired bricks and a minaret. The oldest mausoleum dates from the turn of the 11th and 12th centuries. The facades feature architectural terracotta and carved stucco. Where permitted, visitors can climb the minaret and look out over the Fergana Valley; check access permissions locally. Plan Uzgen as a half-day to full-day trip from Osh. In the morning, shared taxis and marshrutkas connect the two places in about one to one and a half hours. Service frequency and journey times may change, so check current connections.

Gulcha and Aravan also offer their own highlights: the Kurmanjan Datka Museum in Gulcha explores the life and era of Kurmanjan Datka. In Aravan, white figs are grown as part of family traditions and harvested by hand. The fig harvest adds a regional agricultural practice to the historical and religious themes.

Natural Attractions, Passes, and Valleys

The protected Kara-Shoro Nature Park area opened in 1996 and covers 8,450 hectares, mostly consisting of pastureland. This well-preserved area is known for its mineral springs and pine, walnut-fruit, and juniper forests. The group of sacred sites at Abshir-Ata includes the waterfall, the Duldul-Ata shrine, and the Chil-Ustun cave; mazars and rock art from the Davan period lie near the waterfall. At Abshir-Ata, water emerges directly from an opening in the rock, forming a powerful stream. At the foot of the Duldul-Ata cliff are a spring, a mosque, and a venerated tomb.

The road over Taldyk Pass is the main route from Osh to the Alay District. The pass reaches 3,615 meters and is known for its views; road conditions may vary, so check the latest situation before setting out. Chyiyrchyk Pass lies 40 kilometers south of Osh at the entrance to the Alay District. Köl-Duk is a high-altitude lake in the eastern Alay Valley. Community-based tourism in Sary-Mogol includes visits to high-altitude jailoo summer pastures, yak riding, and kumys tastings; mountain lakes in the Peak Lenin area are also part of this experience. Folklore performances and traditional equestrian games can be arranged for groups.

You can plan your trip around the experiences you would most like to focus on.
