Madagascar brings together very different nature and cultural experiences: serial World Heritage sites, rainforests, a royal city with sacred sites, and distinctive traditions in speech, music, and craftsmanship. When planning your trip, it is worth considering these highlights separately. This will help you decide whether forests and wildlife, cultural heritage, or cultural forms of expression should shape your trip before you look for a suitable hotel.

Forest landscapes and their distinctive features

The serial World Heritage site Andrefana Dry Forests comprises four national parks: Ankarafantsika, Mikea, Tsingy de Bemaraha, and Tsimanampesotse. It also includes the two special reserves of Analamerana and Ankarana. The rainforests of Atsinanana offer a different natural highlight: six national parks are spread across the island’s east. Across all groups, the degree of endemism is around 80 to 90 percent; all five families of Malagasy primates and all endemic lemur families are represented.

The two World Heritage sites therefore represent different forest environments: dry forests on the one hand and rainforests on the other. Atsinanana’s biodiversity is also characterized by a high degree of endemism, explicitly applying to all groups. Nature enthusiasts will find two clearly distinct themes, rather than a single, uniform landscape of protected areas.

National parks: location, routes, and nature

Ranomafana National Park stretches across the Haute Matsiatra and Vatovavy Fitovinany regions. The route there follows the RN7 to the Alakamisy-Ambohimaha turnoff, continues along the RNS45 to Vohiparara, and then follows the RN25 to the park entrance. Road conditions can change, so check them before setting out. At Marojejy National Park, visitors can walk through dense primary forests; check access to the trails before your trip.

Andohahela offers its own focus on nature and activities: hiking is possible there. The national park spans three distinct climate zones and is home to a rich variety of animal and plant life. Along the coast of the Indian Ocean, the Pangalanes form an uninterrupted chain more than 400 kilometres long, comprising natural lagoons and lakes, rivers, and estuaries. Each of these different landscapes gives nature trips a distinct focus, rather than fitting them all into a single park or landscape type.

Royal city and woodcraft

The Royal Hill of Ambohimanga includes a royal city and sacred sites. Its distinctive features include fourteen fortified stone gates. For centuries, the site has been a place of worship and pilgrimage for the people of Madagascar and many foreign visitors. The royal city, sacred sites, and gates offer different ways to experience the cultural heritage here.

The Zafimaniry community in southeastern Madagascar preserves a different cultural tradition: its distinctive woodcraft. Houses and tombs are built using traditional mortise-and-tenon joints, without nails, hinges, or other metal fittings. This joining technique is a specific feature of the construction method; it is also part of the community’s distinctive woodcraft tradition.

Speech, music, and trip planning

Malagasy Kabary is a highly structured, poetic form of speech. It uses proverbs, maxims, rhetorical devices, and wordplay, and is performed at celebrations, funerals, official ceremonies, and public events. Tsapiky offers a musical contrast: this fast-paced genre from southwestern Madagascar blends modern and traditional sounds. It is played at social and ritual occasions such as weddings, funerals, celebrations, and ceremonies.

If you plan to visit the parks, check the relevant information about road access or trail access; in Ranomafana, pay particular attention to road conditions, and in Marojejy, check access to the trails.
