Parc du W du Niger lies about 150 km south of Niamey. It is located in the rural municipality of Tamou, in the Department of Say and the Tillabéri Region. The distance gives an approximate sense of its location within the wider area; the administrative divisions place the park in Tamou, Say and Tillabéri. It covers 2,200 km², of which 25 km² are freshwater. The freshwater area is therefore part of the park’s total area, not an additional area.

Location and geographical setting

The park extends between 11°54′ and 12°35′ north latitude and 02°04′ and 02°50′ east longitude. Its natural boundaries are the Niger River to the east, Burkina Faso to the west, the Tapoa to the north and the Mékrou to the south. The coordinates indicate its geographical extent in terms of latitude and longitude; the four cardinal directions make the boundaries easy to understand. Together, these provide both a precise geographical location and named reference points: you can understand the park as an area with its own extent, not merely as a distance south of Niamey.

Vegetation and soils

Six vegetation formations are distinguished in Parc National du « W » du Niger: wooded savanna, shrub savanna, deciduous gallery forests, evergreen gallery forests, semi-evergreen gallery forests and floodplains. The names classify the natural environment into different forms: two refer to savannas, three to gallery forests with different leaf characteristics, and floodplains form a further category. The park’s soils are lateritic and clay-sandy. Vegetation types and soil composition are two different ways of describing the landscape. Specific plant formations are presented alongside soil characteristics, so the natural profile is not reduced to one broad landscape label.

Wildlife in Parc du W du Niger

The wildlife of Parc National du « W » du Niger is characteristic of the Sahelo-Sudanian biome and includes large mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians. The biome provides an overarching framework for understanding its wildlife, while the groups listed make the profile more specific. Together with the six vegetation formations, this offers two perspectives on the park: wildlife on the one hand and distinct vegetation types on the other. For nature enthusiasts, this combination brings the park’s natural character to life.

Cultural connection in Tillabéri

In the wider travel destination of Tillabéri, Boubon pottery is considered one of the region’s important tourist and craft symbols. This regional cultural connection adds a distinct craft theme to the natural perspective offered by Parc du W du Niger. The two themes can be considered separately when planning a trip: the park and landscape as a natural attraction in Say, and pottery as a cultural attraction in the wider Tillabéri area. If you are considering a visit to the pottery, check in advance whether visits are possible.
