Smoky Lake: Trail, Railway History and Pumpkin Festivals
Accommodation in Smoky Lake
Smoky Lake offers several themes to help you plan your trip: the Iron Horse Trail, railway history, a museum, and seasonal events. There’s a range of options, from outdoor activities and local history to markets and pumpkin festivals. You can choose the focus of your stay based on the themes and dates that interest you most.
Iron Horse Trail: A Range of Activities
The Iron Horse Trail offers opportunities for hiking, wagon rides, cycling, snowmobiling, ATV riding, and horseback riding. Operating conditions and seasonal access may vary; keep this in mind when planning, and check conditions for your intended visit.
One trail access point is near the CN Station in Smoky Lake. At the same time, many consider Pumpkin Park a starting point for their Iron Horse Trail adventure. These two local landmarks offer different reference points as you explore the trail.
Railway and Local History
The Canadian Northern Railway Station was built in 1919 according to the standardized design for a third-class station, Plan 100-72. Today, the Smoky Lake CN Station houses the visitor information centre. The historic station thus also serves a present-day information function.
The Smoky Lake Museum is housed in the historic Victoria School building. On display are locally made wood carvings, along with several taxidermied specimens of regional birds and animals. The collection offers a glimpse of local carving traditions and the region’s wildlife.
The historic Pakan Ferry was restored in 1999 and placed in front of the museum. For another perspective on the town’s past, Smoky Lake offers a self-guided tour of its history.
Pumpkin Park and Events
Smoky Lake’s Pumpkin Park features seven giant concrete pumpkins. The annual Smoky Lake Great White North Pumpkin Fair also celebrates all things pumpkin. It includes the Great White North Pumpkin Weight Off, where giant pumpkins compete for top awards. The event’s specific program may change.
Smoky Lake Heritage Days takes place annually over the August long weekend and is open to everyone. Program details may vary. This gives you a different timing to consider from fall events, including the Pumpkin Festival held in October.
Market and Ukrainian Dance Tradition
The Smoky Lake Farmers’ Market is held from April to December, Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., at the Smoky Lake Agricultural Complex. Dates and hours may change; check them before planning a market visit.
During the annual Pumpkin Festival in October, the Farmers’ Market is held outdoors in large tents and in the school gymnasium. About 90 vendors take part. This is an approximate figure; if visiting this particular market is important to your plans, it’s worth checking the latest event information.
In early spring, the Smoky Lake Holubka Dancers hold their year-end dance celebration, featuring a traditional Ukrainian dinner and a performance of historic Ukrainian dance. The date may vary. The market, festival, and dance celebration offer different seasonal occasions to consider when choosing your travel dates.
