Barrhead: History, Parks and Recreation
Accommodation in Barrhead
Barrhead offers a variety of things to explore during a stay: pioneer history and historic grain elevators, gardens and parks, sports facilities, and a summer event. The Town of Barrhead and the County of Barrhead together form a community. The town is northwest of Edmonton, about an hour away, and can be reached via Highway 33. If you’re looking for a hotel in Barrhead, these themes can help you choose what to focus on during your stay: history, outdoor activities, sports, or a seasonal event.
Local History and Landmarks
The Barrhead Centennial Museum’s extensive collection of artifacts showcases the pioneer life of Barrhead’s settlers. The museum also preserves a complete collection of the local newspaper, along with an archive. Objects from settlers’ daily lives are presented alongside the town’s written records—two different ways to explore the area’s history.
The Barrhead Grain Elevators are historic buildings and a recognizable symbol of Western Canada. They can be seen from Elevator Road, offering a glimpse back to the early 20th century. Another distinctive sight is the statue Aaron the Blue Heron, created by artist Trygve Seland in 1984. Visitors can view the statue up close; it also makes a striking photo subject.
Parks and Outdoor Activities
Most parks in Barrhead connect to the town’s walking trail. Cecile Martin Park has two playgrounds and walking paths. Yuill Park has a different focus: its ornamental garden highlights Japanese culture and honors Barrhead’s Japanese sister city, Tokoro. The two parks therefore differ in their facilities and focus: one has playgrounds and walking paths, while the other has a garden with a cultural connection.
Sports and Recreation
The Barrhead Regional Aquatics Centre has a six-lane competition pool, a pool with a zero-depth entry, and a wading pool. It also has a 20-person hot tub, a 20-person steam room, and a lazy river for low-impact therapeutic exercise. The centre is accessible to the entire community and to people of all ages and abilities. The different pools and areas vary in their uses and features.
The Agrena Multiplex has an indoor walking track, as well as indoor and outdoor ice rinks. Nearby, the Barrhead Golf Club has an 18-hole course located five minutes outside Barrhead. The recreation options therefore include both facilities in Barrhead and a golf course outside town.
Summer Event and Dining
The annual Barrhead Blue Heron Fair is a summer event. It features a two-day competitive rodeo and activities for children. As the event schedule may change, check the fair dates before your trip.
Barrhead’s dining options include restaurants, pubs, distilleries, cafés, and other venues. The selection ranges from pizza to Greek, Chinese, and other cuisines; drinks and light snacks are also available. Businesses and menus may change. If you’re looking for a particular cuisine or offering, it’s best to check the current options in advance.
