Grimshaw: Highway 2 and Recreational Activities
Accommodation in Grimshaw
Grimshaw combines a connection to onward travel with opportunities for activity, water recreation, and local history. When planning your stay, it is worth distinguishing the year-round indoor walking track from the seasonal outdoor options. Highway 2 and the Mile Zero Marker also give the community a connection to travel routes.
Highway 2 and the Mile Zero Marker
Highway 2 runs through Grimshaw and provides access to the Northwest Territories and beyond. The Mile Zero Marker marks kilometre zero of the Mackenzie Highway, which runs north toward Manning, High Level, Hay River, Yellowknife, and beyond. Beside the marker is a historic Northern Alberta Railway railcar; the site also offers an opportunity for a photo stop. In this way, the marker’s connection to travel routes is paired with a visible reminder of railway history.
Activity and Orientation at the Mile Zero Regional Multiplex
The Mile Zero Regional Multiplex has a 175.3-metre elevated track for walking, jogging, or running, as well as a well-equipped weight room for training. The multiplex also has an indoor walking track that can be used year-round. Grimshaw’s Visitor Information Centre is located there too. This puts several different places for activity and visitor information in the same facility.
Seasonal Water and Ice Activities
The Grimshaw Outdoor Swimming Pool is open each year from the May long weekend until the third week of August. The Grimshaw Splash Park operates each year from late May to mid-September. Their seasons therefore end at different times: the splash park remains open into September, while the swimming pool season ends in the third week of August. The splash park is an inclusive, interactive, and playful learning and water-play area. Check the current dates for both seasonal facilities before your trip.
The Mainway Electrical Outdoor Skating Rink operates for public skating each winter. Its operation depends on winter weather and ice conditions. If you plan to go skating, take these conditions into account when planning your stay.
Playgrounds and Off-Leash Areas for Dogs
Kinsmen Park has a large playground with a variety of play equipment. The equipment may change. The Grimshaw Off-Leash Dog Park opened in summer 2024. It has a designated area where dogs can run, exercise, and socialize off leash. Both parks add more outdoor options to the sports and water activities, but each has a different focus.
Culture and Activities Near Grimshaw
About 10 km northwest of Grimshaw is the Lac Cardinal Pioneer Village Museum. It depicts a typical pioneer village from the 1920s to the 1940s. The museum holds its Pioneer Day celebration on the second Saturday in August each year. Check the date for your travel year if you plan to visit.
At a campground on the shore of Lac Cardinal near Grimshaw, visitors can swim, windsurf, stand-up paddleboard, canoe, and kayak. These options range from spending time in the water to activities with a paddle or sail, offering a different way to enjoy time at the lake.
