Peace River: Hotels, Trails and Railway History
Accommodation in Peace River
The Peace River, Smoky River, and Heart River converge in Peace River. The three rivers provide a clear geographical reference point for the landscape; when planning your trip, it’s worth organizing trails, viewpoints, and seasonal activities around what you want to do.
Hiking, Cycling, and Winter at Misery Mountain
Peace River’s public trail network covers more than 17 km and is suitable for walking and cycling. The network covers more than 17 km in total; this figure refers to the trail network, not a single route. The suspended pedestrian bridge beneath Highway 2 is also part of it.
You can walk or jog along the Peace River Bridge Pathway; the views take in the town, the river, and the surrounding valley.
At Misery Mountain, nature trails lead to viewpoints overlooking the Peace River Valley and the west side of the community; they can be used for hiking and mountain biking. In winter, the slopes of Misery Mountain on the west side of Peace River can be used for skiing. Each season therefore offers a different focus: nature trails lead to viewpoints, while skiing is also available in winter.
Railway History and Museums
The historic NAR Station was built in 1916 as a “Class C” station for the Central Canada Railway, later known as the Northern Alberta Railways (N.A.R.). It is the last surviving structure of its kind in northern Alberta. In summer, it serves as the City of Peace River’s visitor centre and also hosts museum programs such as the popular Summer Teas.
The Peace River Museum Archives and Mackenzie Centre features exhibits on local history, early explorers, the fur trade, and First Nations history. Its cultural offerings therefore range from the history of a specific railway building to various topics in local and regional history.
Seasonal Recreation and Regional Excursions
The Water Play Park in Peace River adds to the seasonal recreation options with a spray tunnel featuring four loops and water cannons. It is open each year from the May long weekend through Labour Day. If you’re planning a visit during this period, check the specific opening dates in advance.
In the wider region, Peace River Adventures offers guided jet boat tours on the Peace River and Smoky River in northwest Alberta. The offerings also include paddle equipment rentals and guided canoe, kayak, and rafting tours. For specific dates and availability, contact the operator in advance.
When choosing your travel dates, you can focus on specific activities: in summer, the NAR Station as a visitor centre and the Water Play Park are seasonal highlights; in winter, skiing at Misery Mountain is also an option.
