Wainwright: Culture, Events and Attractions
Accommodation in Wainwright
Wainwright combines local history and culture with events throughout the year. When planning your trip, you can first consider whether you have a particular date in mind or would like to get to know the town through its museums, landmarks and recreational activities. February is marked by the Wainwright Arts Festival, among other events; in June, the Agricultural Fair and the Stampede take place together.
Museum, History and Landmarks
The Wainwright and District Museum houses hundreds of documents and artifacts. It is located in the CN Station in the center of the historic district and includes a visitor information center. If you would like to use this center in your planning, check the latest information in advance.
The Memorial Clock Tower connects local history with remembrance of the fallen: it commemorates those who died in the First World War, and the memorial was later expanded to include those who died in the Second World War. After the Wainwright fire in the summer of 1929, the tower was the only structure left standing. The Wainwright Main Street Project includes extensive restorations to the Old Town Hall, the Wainwright Hotel and the CN Station.
The Old Town Hall / Fire Hall is an important cultural landmark and a historic, multipurpose municipal building with neoclassical architectural features. Canada’s largest bison statue also stands in the town center. A pump jack in Petroleum Park points to Wainwright’s early oil industry. Together, these places offer different insights into the town’s historical and cultural character.
Theater also offers a recurring program highlight: Theatre 75 stages several productions each year. These include well-known plays as well as locally written works. Alongside the historic landmarks, culture enthusiasts can enjoy a changing annual stage program.
Events in February and June
The Wainwright Arts Festival takes place every February and includes an evening of literature and music. The Wainwright Stampede offers a different focus: its 74th edition is scheduled for June 24–27, 2027. The program includes four WPCA chuckwagon races and four CPRA rodeo performances.
The Stampede program also includes a parade, a rodeo dance, pancake breakfasts and a fair. The Wainwright Agricultural Fair takes place every June alongside the Stampede, showcasing fruit, vegetables and baked goods. The events are therefore quite distinct: February brings together literature and music, while June features several festivals and events. Dates and program details may change. If you are planning your trip around a specific event, check the latest information before making plans.
Local Markets and Food Events
The annual Taste of Wainwright features a family-friendly tasting patio downtown. The food is inspired by flavors from around the world, and a variety of drinks are also available. The focus is on a shared culinary experience rather than a single dish or a particular cuisine.
The Wainwright Farmers Markets take place year-round. Market dates and vendor participation may vary. Together, the markets and the tasting event offer different opportunities to incorporate local food and drink into your trip plans.
Shared-Use Trails
Wainwright has more than 15 kilometers of shared-use trails. The trail system includes outdoor fitness equipment and benches. The trails complement the town’s historical and cultural offerings with an opportunity to spend time outdoors. If the facilities are important to your plans, check the latest information before your visit.
If you are not visiting for a festival, the museum, theater, landmarks, markets and trails offer other themes around which to plan your time in Wainwright.
