A boiling lake, a long-distance trail with multiple segments and an area where visitors can discover traditional crafts: Dominica combines nature experiences with culture and history. Three national parks shape the range of landscapes and destinations: Morne Trois Pitons National Park, Cabrits National Park and Morne Diablotin National Park. When planning your trip, it’s worth first considering whether hiking, waterscapes or cultural experiences should be the focus.

National Parks, Forests and Special Natural Sites

Morne Trois Pitons National Park protects 6,857 hectares in the central and southern highlands. The park is home to Boiling Lake, a large hot spring with a water temperature of about 95°C. Freshwater Lake, one of Dominica’s largest lakes, is also located there. These destinations give the park distinct landscape features: one is known for its hot spring, the other as a large lake.

Emerald Pool is also in Morne Trois Pitons National Park, at its northern edge. This natural attraction is a 40-foot-high waterfall and is located on Segment 5, the Maroon Trail, of the Waitukubuli National Trail. On hot days, swimmers and bathers can cool off there. The park is also home to endemic reptiles, amphibians and birds, including parrots endemic to Dominica. Sisserou and Jaco parrots are found nowhere else in the world.

Morne Diablotin National Park features elfin forests, montane forests and secondary rainforest. The Syndicate Nature Trail and Parrot Preserve offers tropical rainforest experiences and is considered an important birdwatching site. If you would like to make a summit your hiking destination, you can hike from the Syndicate area along the Morne Diablotin Trail to the summit of Morne Diablotin.

Hiking and Water Experiences

The Waitukubuli National Trail stretches for 184 kilometres and comprises 14 segments. It runs from the village of Scott’s Head to Cabrits National Park. All visitors and non-residents must purchase a trail pass to enter or hike the trail; as pass requirements may change, check the latest information before your hike. For the hike to Boiling Lake, you should also plan for the fact that it is one of the most challenging hikes in Dominica and requires hiring a guide in advance.

The Trafalgar Falls offer another way to experience the island’s waterscapes. The two waterfalls can be reached by following a well-maintained path for 10 to 15 minutes to a viewing platform. Swimming is possible at the smaller waterfall; hot springs are found at the higher one. Diving and snorkelling are the main activities at Champagne Reef in southwestern Dominica: underwater, volcanic fumaroles release heat, and visitors experience warm water above colourful marine formations.

On the Indian River, experienced boatmen take visitors in hand-rowed boats through a coastal wetland and past riverbanks shaped by wildlife and plant life. The Bush Bar on the Indian River offers its own rum drink, smoked fish and local cuisine; the offerings may change. This makes it possible to combine a river trip with a taste of the food and drinks mentioned.

Kalinago Culture and History

The Kalinago Territory is home to the Kalinago, descendants of Dominica’s original inhabitants. Visitors can learn about basket weaving, canoe building, pottery and wood carving. Tours offered by Kalinago guides include hikes along the Asulukati River and to its waterfall, as well as climbs to the summit of Kabet. This combines an encounter with traditional crafts with activities led by Kalinago guides.

North of Portsmouth, Fort Shirley sits on a scenic peninsula and is part of Cabrits National Park. Visitors can climb the walls and look out from the cannons. In Roseau, the Old Market Square is now a craft market for cruise ship passengers and other visitors. The Dominica Museum displays artefacts tracing the island’s history; check the museum’s current operating status before visiting.

Travel Interests and Hotels in Dominica

If you’re looking for hotels in Dominica, you can base your choices on the experiences that matter to you during your stay. The national parks and trails described above offer a useful guide for nature and hiking interests; those who want to focus on culture and crafts can consider the Kalinago Territory and destinations in Roseau. Diving and snorkelling at Champagne Reef offer a different focus. These themes can help you organise your travel interests without assuming that a single location is the right base for every activity.

Ferry connections may also be relevant to your travel plans: catamarans operated by FRS Express des ĂŽles carry 300 to 400 passengers between Dominica, Guadeloupe, Martinique and St. Lucia. Schedules and operating conditions may change, so check the latest times before planning your trip.
