Samaná Bay is surrounded by green mountains and unspoiled beaches. Together with nearby trails, excursions on the water, and historic sights, it offers a trip with different focuses on nature and culture.

Whale Watching and Nature on the Water

Humpback whales visit the bay every year, and whale-watching excursions are offered there from January to March. If you are traveling specifically to see the whales, you can take this period into account when planning your trip. Visitors can also explore mangroves and caves in the bay by boat. The options offer different experiences: seasonal excursions focus on humpback whales, while boat trips focus on the bay’s landscape.

Water taxis to Cayo Levantado depart regularly from the port of Samaná on Avenida Marina. On the publicly accessible part of the island, you can swim, sunbathe, kayak, and go stand-up paddleboarding. If you are planning a visit to the island, note that these activities are available on the publicly accessible part. Check the current boat service before setting out.

Trails and Waterfalls Nearby

The trail to El Limón Waterfall runs for 2.5 kilometers through dense forest and hilly terrain. You can cover the route on foot or on horseback; along the way, you can observe plants and animals. At the end, the waterfall plunges 40 meters from the Sierra de Samaná. When planning, take the route length, terrain, and choice of transport into account, and check local conditions before setting out.

Another nearby excursion destination is Playa Frontón. You can reach it by boat from Las Galeras or via a longer hike. This gives you two different ways to get there. Details may vary depending on the provider and conditions; check the requirements for your chosen option in advance.

Getting to the Peninsula

El Catey International Airport (AZS) serves as the gateway to the Samaná Peninsula. In the wider Samaná travel area, cruise ships call near Cayo Levantado and Samaná Bay during the winter season. When planning, you can take into account both access to the peninsula and seasonal cruise calls in the travel area.
