Santo Domingo: Coast, Caves and Nature Parks
Accommodation in Santo Domingo
The Malecón de La Avenida España runs along the southern coast of Santo Domingo Province, from Puente Juan Carlos to Punta Torrecilla. Alongside the coast, you can explore a range of nature attractions, including the cave lakes of Los Tres Ojos, the Cachón de La Rubia city park and the mangrove island of La Matica. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether you would like to focus on time by the sea or on nature destinations.
The Sea, Swimming and Events
Adults and children often visit the Malecón to spend time by the sea. Playa Boca Chica offers a different experience: its shallow, turquoise water and its popularity as a family-friendly bathing spot shape the character of the beach. The general depth estimate of no more than four feet does not necessarily apply to every spot or every tide. The Malecón, where you can spend time by the sea, and swimming at Playa Boca Chica therefore appeal to different coastal interests.
Sailing and beach volleyball tournaments are held annually in Boca Chica. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these events, check the specific event dates.
Cave Lakes, a City Park and a Mangrove Island
In the municipality of Santo Domingo Este, Parque Nacional Los Tres Ojos is a cave with three freshwater lakes visible only from inside, and a fourth lake visible from outside. The way the lakes are divided is one of the distinctive features of this natural setting: three can be seen only from inside the cave, while the fourth is visible from outside.
Parque Manantial Cachón de La Rubia offers a different connection with nature. It is a 1.9 km² city park designated as a nature reserve. This clearly distinguishes a city park with protected status from the cave and its lakes. Both places offer nature experiences that are not tied to a coastal stay.
La Matica, a mangrove island off the coast of Boca Chica, is a resting and nesting site for numerous bird species, including herons. Unlike the cave or the city park, the focus here is on a coastal habitat. The presence of individual bird species can vary seasonally.
More Experiences in the Dominican Republic
The Dominican Republic also offers cultural and landscape attractions that complement the picture of a trip beyond Santo Domingo. Altos de Chavón is a model of a 16th-century Mediterranean village built entirely of stone. The Archaeological Museum of Altos de Chavón houses a collection on the indigenous culture of the Dominican Republic. As a landscape contrast, Bahía de Las Águilas is a five-mile-long beach and part of the protected Jaragua National Park.
For a more active nature experience, the 27 Charcos de Damajagua route passes through dense forest and over footbridges. From there, visitors descend waterfalls into turquoise pools by jumping or sliding, wearing helmets and safety equipment. Take current safety advice into account when planning. This hike and a stay in coastal destinations represent different ways to experience the landscape of the Dominican Republic.
