Data de Villamil: Beach, Nature and Culture
Accommodation in Data de Villamil
Data de Villamil brings together beaches, a waterway surrounded by mangroves, and religious cultural heritage.
Beaches and coastal scale
The beaches of Data Villamil stretch for approximately 2.5 kilometers. A description from 2018 mentions swimming at these beaches as an option. In the wider regional area, they form part of a continuous 13.25-kilometer stretch of coast, running from the Punta Chapoya sector in General Villamil Playas to the mouth of the Estero de Data. The two measurements refer to different lengths: around 2.5 kilometers describes the beaches of Data Villamil, while 13.25 kilometers refers to the longer coastal stretch with the named endpoints.
Estuary and birdwatching
The Estero, also called the Data de Villamil waterway, is located in Recinto Data de Villamil. Mangroves surround it, and the waterway offers an opportunity to observe, among other birds, great egrets, snowy egrets, cormorants, frigatebirds, and curlews. This natural attraction differs from the coast: the Estero is known for its mangroves and birdwatching, while the beaches are notable for the length of the stretch and the swimming opportunity mentioned in a 2018 description.
Monasterio de Santa Teresa
The Monasterio de Santa Teresa was founded in May 1975 and has a collection of stained-glass windows. Their subjects include the Trinity, Christ’s incarnation in Mary, and Saint Teresa of Ávila. The religious imagery and the founding date offer two distinct aspects for understanding the monastery’s cultural significance: the windows identify what the collection depicts, while the year places the founding of the Monasterio in time.
More places to explore in Guayas
The wider destination of Guayas offers other cultural and scenic highlights. In the canton of Nobol, the Santuario Nacional Narcisa de Jesús is a pilgrimage site on the banks of the Río Daule; it houses the incorrupt body of Santa Narcisa de Jesús. Also in Nobol, Hacienda San José is considered a place to visit because Narcisa de Jesús was born there on October 29, 1832. These two places offer different ways to explore religious and biographical heritage: the Santuario as a pilgrimage site, and the Hacienda as the saint’s birthplace.
In Bucay, the cloud forest in Recinto La Esperanza Alta includes more than 40 waterfalls visited by local and international tourists. In Guayaquil, Barrio Las Peñas has 36 historic houses with galleries and workshops; the houses preserve colonial-style architecture. Parque Seminario in central Guayaquil is a refuge for the famous green iguana and brings together history, nature, and tradition.
