Playas brings together coastal, natural and cultural themes that appeal to different travel interests. Alongside Playa General Villamil, the canton’s main beach, these themes range from mangroves and birdwatching to traditional balsa rafting, art and local cuisine. They have different geographical connections: some relate to General Villamil, others to the surrounding area or to the parish and canton it belongs to.

Coast, Mangroves and Activities

Playa General Villamil is the main beach of Playas canton and lies opposite the town of Playas. Nearby, in Recinto Data de Villamil, a settlement within Playas canton, is the Data de Villamil estuary, or water trail. Mangroves surround it, and visitors can spot herons, cattle egrets, cormorants, frigatebirds and sandpipers, among other birds. Alongside the beach, this offers a distinct mangrove habitat and opportunities for specific birdwatching.

Leisure activities in Playas canton include hiking, ecotourism, water sports—especially surfing—paragliding and photography. The range extends from physical activity and water sports to nature interests and photographic subjects; surfing is the water sport given particular prominence.

Balsa Rafting, Art and History

In the town of General Villamil, knowledge of building and navigating traditional balsa rafts lives on in the memory and practice of some fishermen. It encompasses knowledge of both raft construction and navigation. In Playas canton, tourist trips on sailing rafts and excursions at sea in traditional balsa-wood boats are offered. The Huancavilca have used such boats for fishing since their time; their descendants, who work as artisanal fishermen, have adapted them for tourism. This timeline thus extends from fishing with the rafts to their development for tourism.

In the parish, the Galeria de Arte Hugo Lara (Avda. Paquizha and Jaime RoldĂłs) displays works by various artists in different techniques, as well as ceramic pieces from other cultures. This combination offers a different focus from the maritime tradition of balsa rafting. Casa de Don Victor Estrada is also associated with the historical and cultural heritage of Playas canton.

Typical Dishes from the Canton

The cuisine of Playas canton also features a range of typical seafood dishes. Ceviches are prepared with lobster, spiny lobster, shrimp, shellfish, fish, octopus or mixed ingredients. The canton’s repertoire also includes arroz marinero, whole grilled fish, encebollado with albacore and roasted oysters. The dishes vary both in their ingredients and in how they are prepared: ceviche is served alongside rice dishes, grilled fish, encebollado and oysters.
