Sucumbíos: Lagoons, Waterfalls and Trails Through Diverse Landscapes
Accommodation in Sucumbíos
In Sucumbíos, the nature experiences described range from lagoons and wetlands to waterfalls and longer routes through diverse landscapes. There are also trails with specific access details and places where nature observation or historical connections take center stage. When planning, it is worth considering these offerings individually: the information ranges from a trail of about 25 minutes to a route around 80 kilometers long.
Lagoons and wildlife viewing in protected areas
The Limoncocha Biological Reserve primarily protects the Limoncocha lagoons and the smaller Yanacocha, along with surrounding wetlands, marshes and tropical rainforests. The area is a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention. Birdwatching and photography are possible at Laguna Limoncocha; visitors can also observe caimans and fireflies there. The Sendero Caimán is a hiking trail in the reserve. This place thus brings together a protected landscape and several different ways to spend time outdoors.
Laguna Grande in the Cuyabeno Reserve also offers its own visitor experiences: nighttime excursions to observe caimans and hikes along the trails are possible there. Other possible experiences include community visits to prepare casabe and shamanic activities. The drive to Laguna Grande leads from Lago Agrio via Tarapoa and Puerto El Carmen de Putumayo to a bridge over the Río Cuyabeno; the journey then continues by river. This combination of road and river travel makes the access route different from the hiking trails described at the lagoons themselves.
Waterfalls and routes through changing landscapes
The Ruta de las Cascadas in the canton of Sucumbíos is approximately 80 kilometers long. It runs from Playón de San Francisco through several climate zones, from cold highland moorland to cloud forest in the tropical rainforest. The agrotourism route, by contrast, follows the access road to Sucumbíos Province, from the Cocha Seca sector to the town of La Barquilla. Driving or cycling is recommended for taking in the scenery and sampling regional fruits. The two routes therefore offer different highlights: one is a longer journey through climate zones, while the other is a drive or bike ride focused on scenery and fruit.
Descriptions of individual waterfalls provide shorter access details. From Recinto Atenas, a trail of about 25 minutes leads to Cascada Cayagama. The waterfall is approximately 15 meters high, and the natural pool at its base is no more than two meters deep. Access to Cascada Cabeza de Lagarto is via Recinto Amazonas and the San Jorge suspension bridge. This is followed by a 100-meter walk and then another 50-meter trail to the waterfall. Flora and fauna can also be observed there. The measurements refer to different trails and routes and cannot be compared as equivalent walking times.
Access to El Reventador Volcano is via the Río Azuela and a six-kilometer interpretive trail. Along the way, visitors can see diverse flora, bromeliads and various bird species. Visitors can go rafting at La Playa Escondida. It is located on the Lumbaquí–La Bonita road, 300 meters from the bridge over the Río Aguarico and five minutes from the Interoceánica highway. Those looking for a nature experience that includes a specific activity will find different points of reference here than on the trails and at the waterfalls described above.
Historical connections and regional orientation
The Ruta de las Cascadas also reflects the history of the canton of Sucumbíos, which was shaped by the rubber boom beginning in the 1920s. Another historic site is the Cañón de Coca in the parish of El Reventador. It is considered a historic crossing; a six-meter bridge there connects the provinces of Sucumbíos and Napo. These historical connections add a cultural dimension to choosing routes and places, extending beyond nature observation and outdoor activities.
Laguna Azul is also among the natural attractions of the canton of Gonzalo Pizarro. To choose a base, you can consider the specific places and trails you want to visit and review the details for each route separately. This makes it clear whether a description refers to a lagoon, a trail, a waterfall or a longer route.
