In Baja Verapaz Department, cultural traditions and impressive natural scenery go hand in hand. In Rabinal, Rabinal Achí is part of a living oral and written tradition; the landscape offers everything from a weather-dependent valley view to a waterfall and a protected quetzal habitat. This gives you two distinct focuses for planning your trip: cultural history and nature.

Rabinal: Performance tradition and remembrance

Rabinal Achí is part of the Rabinal region in Baja Verapaz and has been passed down from generation to generation. A custodian preserves its material heritage and continues to develop the living oral and written tradition. Masks worn by the main characters, their costumes, music and live instrumentation shape the artistic presentation. Those interested in the performing arts will find a cultural highlight here, where the tradition is just as important as the visible elements of the performance.

The origins of the Museo Comunitario de la Memoria Histórica de Rabinal offer another layer of remembrance. It was established in 2000 at the initiative of women and men who had survived the CAI. Their aim was to make the memory of more than 5,000 victims from the municipality of Rabinal in Baja Verapaz known. Its founding and purpose give an exploration of Rabinal a distinct historical dimension alongside its performance tradition.

Landscape of viewpoints, waterfalls and habitats

Near Rabinal, the Mirador del valle de Rabinal offers views of the Valle del Urram landscape and Cerro Místico Kaj Yup. How clearly the natural scenery comes into view depends on the weather. Cerro Místico Kaj Yup is also connected with the history and veneration of the Achí people.

Salto de Chilascó is located in the Aldea San Rafael Chilascó in Baja Verapaz. It has a drop of approximately 160 meters. Another natural highlight is the protected Biotopo del Quetzal, located between Alta Verapaz and Baja Verapaz, which preserves the habitat of the quetzal, Guatemala’s national bird. Together, a weather-dependent viewpoint, a waterfall with an approximate height and the protection of a habitat offer different ways to enjoy nature.

Guatemala as a broader travel destination

Elsewhere in Guatemala, other destinations offer their own cultural and historical perspectives. The Quirigua Archaeological Park and Ruins preserve 17 monuments carved between 426 and 810 AD. Antigua Guatemala was founded in 1524 as Santiago de Guatemala. The city has preserved its 16th-century layout and most of its architectural heritage; numerous churches and monasteries bear witness to the influence of the Christian Church on every aspect of city life during the colonial period.

Tikal National Park also brings together archaeological and landscape highlights. Its 57,600 hectares encompass wetlands, savanna, and tropical broadleaf and palm forests. The roughly 400-hectare inner urban zone includes palaces, temples, ceremonial platforms, ball courts, terraces, and large and small plazas. Notable wildlife includes five cat species, including jaguars and pumas, several monkey species, anteaters and more than 300 bird species.

Tak'alik Ab'aj offers another perspective through time: its 1,700-year history spans from 800 BC to 900 AD; during the first half of this period, the Olmec civilization transitioned to early Maya culture. Innovative water management systems have been found there, and sacred spaces and buildings were designed according to cosmological principles. Indigenous groups belonging to 22 different Mayan language communities still consider the site sacred and visit it for rituals. For a different kind of experience, the stepped natural pools of Semuc Champey offer visitors the chance to swim in fresh, turquoise water. Check local conditions before your trip.
