Discover Kralendijk
Accommodation in Kralendijk
Kralendijk is the capital and main port of Bonaire. When choosing a hotel, the town offers a clear urban focus: you can include walks along streets lined with Caribbean architecture, shopping on Kaya Grandi, and historical themes around Fort Oranje in your travel plans. Consider which of these interests you want to shape your stay.
Fort Oranje and Kralendijk’s history
The Dutch built Fort Oranje in 1796 in the settlement then known as Playa. Over the years, the fort served, among other things, as a prison, police station, warehouse, and fire station. Its various uses offer insight into several periods of its history.
A wooden lighthouse was built at the fort in 1886 and replaced by a stone one in 1932. Local usage also shapes the town’s name: in Papiamentu, Kralendijk is often called Playa, meaning “beach.”
Explore the center on foot
Visitors can stroll through Kralendijk and see its Caribbean architecture. The Stadswandeling Historisch Kralendijk provides information about historical sights in the center and lets you explore the town at your own pace. The map for the Stadswandeling Historisch Kralendijk may also be useful for planning. If you would like to use it, check its current availability.
Kaya Grandi is Kralendijk’s main street, where visitors can shop. The Terramar Museum is located in the Terramar shopping center in central Kralendijk. This means you can plan around different interests: a historical walking tour, a shopping trip, or a museum visit. If you opt for the latter, check current visiting options.
Bonaire as a broader travel destination
Nature and culture are also part of planning a trip to Bonaire. At 700 hectares, Lac is the largest lagoon in the ABC islands. It is part of the Bonaire National Marine Park and has been a Ramsar site of particular importance as a wetland since 1980. The mangrove area at Lac has served for generations as a nursery for various fish species that live in Bonaire’s waters; the mangroves are also used as a recreational area.
Activities at Boka Slagbaai and the adjacent Saliña Slagbaai include birdwatching, snorkeling, and cliff jumping. Check the current park rules and conditions before visiting. Guided tours go through Washington Slagbaai National Park, Rincon, and Kralendijk. Local guides on Bonaire show visitors the island’s sights and explain its history, culture, birdlife, and marine life. If you are planning a guided tour, check current providers.
The Rincon Exhibition offers an overview of the cultural heritage of Rincon, the oldest settlement on Bonaire. Check current visiting options if you are planning a visit. Dia di Rincon takes place annually on Bonaire; specific dates may vary.
Much of Bonaire can be explored by car, taxi, or bus. The ferry is recommended for a day trip from Bonaire to Klein Bonaire. For planning, check current operators, schedules, service areas, and prices.
