Patron Saint Festivals and Processions in Nandaime
The main festival in the municipality of Nandaime is dedicated to Santa Ana, the municipality’s patron saint, and takes place each year around July 26. The patron saint festivals honor Santa Ana and San Joaquín. They begin on July 16 with the novena prayers and end on July 26, the main feast day. The Baile de Los Diablitos is associated with these festivals; it is usually performed on July 24 and 25.
Good Friday is also part of Nandaime’s religious calendar. Two Vía Sacra processions take place that day: one in the morning from the Santa Ana church, and the other in the afternoon from the El Calvario church. Together, they follow the 14 Stations of the Cross. If you want to plan your trip around a festival, check the dates for the relevant year, as the annual schedule may vary.
Nature Reserves and Landscapes
The Río Manares Nature Reserve in the municipality of Nandaime was designated on September 8, 1983. It includes the Mecatepe and Juan Tallo lagoon system, as well as the Ochomogo River, which serves as a natural boundary for the municipality. Possible activities in the area include hiking, birdwatching, and guided tours through dry forest and aquatic ecosystems. Check current dates and access options before making specific plans.
Another nature conservation highlight is Finca Domitila. It is considered the country’s first private wildlife reserve and preserves one of the most significant remaining tropical dry forests. Finca Domitila is also part of the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor. By comparison, the Río Manares Nature Reserve focuses on its lagoons, river, and possible activities in dry forest and aquatic ecosystems. The two nature attractions therefore differ in the landscapes associated with each.
Agriculture and Other Experiences
Several agriculture-focused experiences in Nandaime are associated with specific places. Finca Ecológica Agroforestal El Buen Pastor offers forest walks and hikes through teak, coffee, and cacao-growing areas. Finca La Sanadora is associated with tours of medicinal plant plots, a hands-on workshop on making natural medicine, and the chance to observe forest flora and fauna. Cooperativa Hibiscus offers walks through plantations, a tour of the wine factory, and wine tastings. These highlights range from crops and forests to medicinal plants and winemaking.
Watermelon farming is also directly associated with El Manchón. According to a report dated March 3, 2025, the Chévez siblings have been growing watermelons there together with their now-deceased father for more than 30 years. A 2014 report located El Manchón at kilometer 71 of the Pan-American Highway between Nandaime and Rivas. At the time, it described around 120 watermelon producers and about 20 roadside stands selling a variety of tropical fruits. The two reports offer different insights: one covers the family history of watermelon farming, while the other describes roadside sales at the time.
