Canyon landscapes, a mountain lagoon, and local culture shape the travel experience in Madriz Department. Around Somoto, striking rock formations, viewpoints, and water activities are the main attractions. San Lucas combines a museum with pottery crafts and rehearsals by local cultural groups; in Las Sabanas, mountain scenery is complemented by archaeological finds. These differences can help you choose the focus of your trip before looking for hotels.

Canyons and Landscapes

The 170.3-hectare Monumento Nacional Cañón de Somoto protected area is located in the municipality of Somoto. The geological formation is approximately three kilometers long and includes volcanic rock cliffs 80 to 100 meters high. At the bottom, the Río Coco winds through the canyon. The area figure describes the protected area, while the length and height characterize the geological formation: the numbers represent different scales of the landscape. The monument has hiking trails established by INTUR, where visitors can experience the views and wildlife of the area.

Water activities are another option: visitors can travel through the pools by boat or on inner tubes. Residents of the community of Los Sonis organize horseback rides at Monumento Nacional Cañón de Somoto and manage the tourist activities there. If you plan a water excursion or horseback ride, check current availability and arrangements locally.

Cañón Seco de Icalupe is also located in Somoto. A rock formation rises from the mountain range, with a tourist viewpoint on its outcrop. From there, you can see the terrain of the border area with Honduras in several directions. A hiking trail also leads from the viewpoint. This makes the view of the border terrain and the hiking option two distinct aspects of the site.

Laguna La Bruja in Las Sabanas lies between high mountains and is surrounded by coffee-growing areas and oak forests. This is a different landscape from the volcanic rock cliffs near Somoto: here, the mountain backdrop, lagoon, cultivated areas, and forest shape the scenery. Reserva Natural SerranĂas de Tepe Somoto-La Patasta was designated an area of national interest in 1991. It spans San Lucas and Cusmapa in Madriz, as well as Pueblo Nuevo and Limay in the Department of EstelĂ.

Culture and Local Highlights

In addition to its permanent exhibition on the six stages of the Sandinista Revolution, Museo Héroes y Mártires de San Lucas displays archaeological pieces with Indigenous features, pottery made by the craftswomen of Loma Panda, and traditional tools and household items. Mujeres Artesanas de Loma Panda make pottery items such as cups, dolls, animal figures, and depictions of deities. Their pottery therefore includes both vessels and figurative designs.

Casa Municipal de Cultura y Creatividad Florencio Moreno is next to the museum. Cultural groups from the municipality of San Lucas rehearse plays, dance, and singing there. The museum’s collection and the cultural groups’ rehearsals thus offer distinct cultural perspectives. Petroglyphs and engravings dating from pre-Columbian times have been found in Cueva El Matasano in Las Sabanas.

The Indigenous community of San José de Palmira is five kilometers west of Totogalpa and offers hiking trails through wooded terrain. If you have specific hiking plans, it is worth checking what local options are currently available.
