The Department of Managua stretches from the Pacific coast to the shore of Lake Xolotlán. Its destinations combine cultural history in Managua with volcanic lagoons, hiking trails and wildlife watching. You can plan your stay based on whether you are most interested in museums, trails in protected areas or activities on the water.

Museums and History

The Museo Nacional de Nicaragua “Diocleciano Chaves” is located in the historic center of Managua. It was founded in 1897 and has been housed in the Palacio Nacional de la Cultura since 1997.

The Parque Museo de la Victoria Sandinista “Carlos Fonseca” is a different kind of museum. As an open-air museum with an educational purpose, it allows visitors to learn about the history of the popular uprising against the Somoza dynasty. Thus, the Department’s cultural offerings include not only the National Museum but also a museum visit expressly focused on this historical subject.

Volcanic Lagoons and Nature Areas

The protected areas in the Department of Managua include the Chiltepe Peninsula and the Chocoyero–El Brujo Nature Reserve. The department is home to the volcanic lagoons Asososca, Tiscapa, Apoyeque and Xiloá. The Chiltepe Peninsula has two crater lakes surrounded by tropical forest. It also includes the Apoyeque caldera, with its namesake lagoon, as well as the volcanic lagoon of Xiloá. These names represent different nature-related features within the region’s travel offerings: crater lakes, a caldera and volcanic lagoons.

Activities at Laguna de Xiloá include rowing, sailing and swimming. When planning your trip, you can distinguish these water activities from hiking trails and wildlife watching in the protected areas. If you are particularly interested in the peninsula, it also has a hiking trail that leads to the western edge of the Apoyeque caldera, in addition to its lagoons.

Hiking Trails and Wildlife Watching

In the Chocoyero–El Brujo Nature Reserve, the Sendero El Congo is 1,300 meters long, and the stated duration is one hour. Along the way, you can look for animal tracks and observe primates. The Sendero El Chocoyero leads to the colonies where the reserve’s characteristic species nests. The two trails have different focuses: the description of Sendero El Congo gives its length, duration and potential wildlife sightings, while Sendero El Chocoyero is described by its destination—the nesting colonies.

The coasts of the Chiltepe Peninsula offer another distinctive nature experience. Waterbirds and wading birds are found especially in the small bay of Naguayopa, opposite Mateare, including piches, ducks, herons and cormorants. Their presence can vary. The coastline thus complements the volcanic landscapes and hiking trails with opportunities for birdwatching, without guaranteeing a sighting.
