Sébaco: City Traditions and Archaeological Heritage
Accommodation in Sébaco
Sébaco offers two geographical perspectives on a trip: the city, with its changing history and traditions, and the archaeological heritage in the Municipio de Sébaco. Cultural themes and opportunities for outdoor activities round out the experience. If you’re looking for a hotel for your stay in Sébaco, you can first consider whether the city’s history or the sites and collections in the municipality better match your travel interests.
City History and Traditions
Over time, Sébaco changed location four times: from Sébaco Viejo to Los Congos and Tecuanapa, and then to its present location. A traditional Diana procession in honor of the patron saint makes its way through the entire city of Sébaco in the early morning, accompanied by music and fireworks. Cerro de la Cruz is in the eastern, higher-elevation part of the city and was traditionally a gathering place for religious activities, especially during the Día de la Santa Cruz celebrations on May 3. The traditions take place in different locations: the Diana procession moves through the city, while the hill is a specific gathering place.
The Museo de Arqueología e Historia Cihuacoatl de Sébaco is north of the town hall. It was founded on March 15, 2014. An account published in 2023 states that its collection includes more than 2,500 ceramic and stone objects.
Archaeological Heritage in the Municipio de Sébaco
Petroglyphs, monoliths, and pre-Columbian remains can be found in the community of Chagüitillo in the Municipio de Sébaco. The pre-Hispanic sites of Santuario Los Venados and Santuario Apamico are near Chagüitillo. The Museo Arqueológico de Chagüitillo preserves funerary urns, stone tools, ceramics, and other objects related to the history of the first inhabitants of the Valle de Sébaco.
In the Municipio de Sébaco, Santuario Los Venados, Santuario Apamico, and the Museo Precolombino de Chagüitillo form an archaeological route for cultural and scientific tourism. At Santuario Los Venados, rock carvings depict anthropomorphic and zoomorphic figures, as well as symbols associated with the beliefs and worldview of the region’s earlier inhabitants. Anthropomorphic figures depict humans, while zoomorphic figures depict animals; both forms appear alongside the symbols. Santuario Apamico preserves a petroglyph called Calendario Lunar de Apamico. In terms of their subject matter, Los Venados features the described motifs, while Apamico is known for a named rock carving.
Walks and Activities
Cerro de la Cruz is suitable for outdoor walks. Another activity is available at Centro recreativo Paso Real in the community of Paso Real on the Río Viejo, also in the Municipio de Sébaco: visitors can try artisanal fishing and kayaking there. This lets you distinguish between walks on Cerro de la Cruz and the activities mentioned in Paso Real.
