Moyogalpa is the main gateway to Ometepe Island; visitors arrive daily at the ferry port from various places. There are hotels, hostels, restaurants and small shops there that cater directly to tourists. Taxis and mototaxis can also be found at the port. If you would initially like to orient yourself around the island’s gateway and visitor services when choosing a location, Moyogalpa offers a concrete point of reference.

Ferry Port and Island Model

The Muelle de Moyogalpa is an L-shaped reinforced-concrete pier that extends about 40 meters into the water from the lakeshore. Two adjoining structures accommodate larger vessels, including ferries. The Fuente de los dos volcanes is located in the roundabout of the port complex on the southern approach to the pier. It is a large, scale model of Ometepe Island surrounded by water. Thus, the island’s gateway and its miniature representation stand side by side at the port.

Architecture in Moyogalpa and the Municipality

Some wooden hacienda-style homes in Moyogalpa showcase vernacular architecture influenced by early 20th-century North American architecture. For travelers who would like to explore built heritage as well as the port, this style offers another aspect of the town.

In the municipality of Moyogalpa, Doña Azucena GuillĂ©n’s house is considered the oldest in the municipality. The two-story building was constructed more than 75 years ago and retains its original all-wood construction. Its age, number of stories and building style give this house a different architectural profile from the wooden hacienda-style homes.

Nature and Farms in the Surrounding Area

Near Moyogalpa lies Punta JesĂșs MarĂa, also known as Punta de la Paloma. As the water level drops, the sand forms a road-like peninsula in the lake. Possible activities include walking, observing the vegetation and wildlife, picnicking, swimming and camping. The focus here is on a natural feature and outdoor activities, while the port is primarily defined by arrivals and visitor services.

Two farms in the surrounding area also offer different glimpses of rural life. Finca MarĂa Andrea is located in the municipality of La ConcepciĂłn. Visitors can learn about daily farm work and the cultivation of plantains, staple grains, vegetables, legumes, coffee and ornamental plants alongside farmers.

Finca Samaria is located in the municipality of Los Ángeles. Visitors can milk cows, make their own cheese, tour the farm and enjoy the beach. The farms differ mainly in their focus: María Andrea emphasizes daily agricultural life and crop cultivation; Samaria combines hands-on activities involving milk and cheese with a farm tour and the beach.

The patron saint festivities of the municipality of Moyogalpa are dedicated to Santa Ana. Their described events include a morning procession through the town’s streets with fireworks and the dance of the Inditas.
