If you’re looking for a hotel in San Juan del Sur, you can plan your trip around the specific themes that take shape here: traditional patron saint festivals, Refugio de Vida Silvestre La Flor, and cuisine featuring fish and seafood dishes. The different dates are especially helpful if you’d like to combine your stay with a celebration.

Festivals and dates in the municipality

Celebrations in honor of San Juan Bautista, the patron saint of the municipality of San Juan del Sur, traditionally begin on the last Sunday in May. To mark the start, the statue of the saint is taken down; it returns on June 24, when the celebrations end. Musically accompanied Dianas are also part of the festivities, winding through the municipality’s main streets and neighborhoods. Dance performances take place during the day, and fireworks are held in the evening. Chicha de maíz, Nacatamal, and Indio Viejo are handed out at the festival in honor of the patron saint.

A second traditional date is the celebration of the Virgen del Carmen on July 16. The procession takes place at sea and lasts an hour and a half. Hundreds of boats, including small fishing boats and pangas, accompany it. A philharmonic band plays from the boat carrying the statue of the saint. The two festivals also differ in form: the celebration of San Juan Bautista includes Dianas through streets and neighborhoods, daytime performances, and fireworks; the Virgen del Carmen celebration centers on the procession at sea. If you’d like to plan your stay around one of these traditions, check the program for your specific travel dates.

Nature and turtle conservation at Refugio La Flor

Refugio de Vida Silvestre La Flor is a 7,349-hectare protected area in the municipality of San Juan del Sur and a sanctuary for the Carey, Tora, Verde, and Paslama sea turtle species. The refuge is therefore associated with a specific conservation issue: protecting these four named sea turtle species.

A 2025 account lists hiking, open-air camping, guided walks, birdwatching, and the release of newly hatched turtles as activities at the refuge. The options listed include walking, observation, and an activity involving young turtles; camping is also included. If you’re planning a visit, check the current visitor requirements. In 2020, visitors from all over Nicaragua came to the refuge to observe a mass arrival of nesting sea turtles. This dated event adds a historical perspective on the animals’ arrival to the information about the protected area.

Fish dishes and local festival cuisine

Local cuisine in San Juan del Sur includes seafood soup, seafood ceviche, mackerel medallions, and fish pie. Ceviche made from fresh fish marinated in lime juice and grilled fish are also named as representative dishes of the municipality. A variety of preparations are therefore featured: fish is marinated or grilled, and seafood also appears in soups and ceviche.

The dishes handed out at the festival in honor of San Juan Bautista add a distinct note alongside the fish and seafood dishes. Chicha de maíz, Nacatamal, and Indio Viejo are associated with this festival. When planning your trip, you can therefore take into account both the dates of the traditional celebrations and your interest in the cuisine or the refuge.
