Hiking and Waterfalls

For travelers to Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, the La Soufriere Cross Country Trail on Saint Vincent is a notable hiking destination. It leads from sea level to the summit of La Soufriere Volcano at 4,048 feet (1,178 m), is about 9 miles (15 km) long, and can be hiked from either the leeward or windward side of Saint Vincent. The option to hike the trail from either side is therefore part of the planning, alongside the distance and summit elevation.

The path to Dark View Falls, by contrast, is short and easy. It leads through the rainforest and crosses the Richmond River via a bamboo bridge or a conventional bridge. At the destination, two cascading waterfalls plunge over high rock faces into natural pools. Compared with the Cross Country Trail, the focus here is on the short path, the river crossing, and the waterfalls; there, the hike is defined by the roughly 15 kilometers and the summit.

Coast and Views

Horse Shoe Reef is a coral reef with abundant fish and coral. Owia Salt Pond is a sea-fed swimming pool at the northern tip of the windward side of Saint Vincent. Mt. Wynne Beach is considered one of the best black sand beaches on Saint Vincent. Travelers who want to compare different coastal landscapes can choose from a coral reef, a seawater pool, and a black sand beach.

From Belmont Lookout, the panoramic view extends north and east into the Marriaqua Valley; Bequia to the southeast and Battowia to the west are also visible. This adds a distinct perspective to the hiking trails: instead of a route, the valley and islands in several directions are the focus. The compass directions help make the panorama easy to read: the valley lies to the north and east, while Bequia and Battowia appear to the southeast and west, respectively.

Gardens, History, and Sailing

The Botanical Gardens were founded in 1765 and are considered the oldest botanical gardens in the Western Hemisphere. A guided tour of the gardens costs EC$10 per person; confirm the date and fee before your visit. Black Point Tunnel was built around 1815 by the British using enslaved labor and is 360 feet long. The founding of the gardens and the construction of the tunnel are two distinct historical points of reference.

Cumberland Bay is considered one of the best-known yacht anchorages on Saint Vincent. This adds a maritime perspective alongside the hiking trails and viewpoints. For travelers interested in sailing, the bay offers a different focus from the hiking trails and viewpoints.
