Antiguo Cuscatlán offers visitors a range of things to explore: annual patron saint festivals, monthly festivals and fairs, the Jardín Botánico La Laguna, and a food culture in which pupusas feature prominently. When planning a trip, the different event schedules and the features of the garden and city center are especially relevant.

Patron Saint Festivals and Monthly Events

The annual patron saint festivals are dedicated to the Santos Niños Inocentes (Holy Innocents); the tradition has been celebrated since the 10th century. The main festival days are December 26, 27 and 28. Check these dates before planning a specific visit. The festival program includes religious and cultural activities, parades, rides, light shows and folk dances. Individual events may vary from year to year.

In addition, Antiguo Cuscatlán hosts monthly festivals or fairs. These include the Festival Gastronómico, the Festival de Bandas, the Feria de Artesanías y Plantas, the Feria Industrial and the Festival del Maíz. These events attract visitors from various parts of El Salvador and Central America. Venues include the central park and Parque Madreselva. Dates and programs may vary; check in advance if you want to plan your visit around a specific event.

Jardín Botánico La Laguna

Jardín Botánico La Laguna is located south of the city of Antiguo Cuscatlán, on the site of a former volcanic crater. The eruption occurred more than 2,200 years ago. The garden covers 30 manzanas; its public area covers 4.5 manzanas. These area figures refer to different sections: 30 manzanas for the garden and 4.5 manzanas for the public area.

The public area has a café, a library, a herbarium, picnic areas, a plant nursery, a children's playground, a multipurpose hall and parking. The facilities include both botanical features, such as the herbarium and nursery, and a range of spaces for relaxing and recreation. This makes the garden a distinct attraction alongside the city's events.

Pupusas and Local Cuisine

Antiguo Cuscatlán is not known for a signature dish of its own, but it is considered a popular place to enjoy pupusas. Fillings range from cheese or cheese with loroco to chicharrón, beans and mixed ingredients, as well as chorizo, basil, pepperoni or shrimp. In the city's historic area, family-run restaurants serve traditional Salvadoran dishes, including pupusas and other corn-based foods. Individual restaurants and menus may change; bear this in mind when planning a visit to a specific restaurant.

City Center and Further Points of Reference

The central park is in the colonial-era city center of Antiguo Cuscatlán and is visited by tourists. It serves as a landmark for the historic center and is also one of the venues for the monthly festivals and fairs.

La Gran Vía offers cinemas, shops and restaurants. Together with the central park and Jardín Botánico La Laguna, these provide a range of local points of reference: a colonial-era city center, a botanical garden south of the city, and a selection of cinemas, shops and dining options.
