El Sunzal: Waves, Surf History and Nature
Accommodation in El Sunzal
El Sunzal appeals to travelers who want to shape their stay around the area’s surf profile. Long, unbroken waves, frequent wildlife sightings while surfing, and a connection to a 1977 film give the destination several facets. When choosing a hotel, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your trip: Do you mainly want to surf, or would you also like to explore the wider destination of La Libertad?
Waves, Wildlife, and Surf History
The outer surf break at El Sunzal has waves that break continuously for almost 200 meters. During larger swells, El Sunzal generally offers gentler waves that are popular with beginners. These are two distinct features: the almost 200 meters refers to the outer break, while the gentler waves occur during larger swells. If surfing is the focus of your trip, you can consider both aspects of the surf profile when choosing your destination.
Birds, sea turtles, manta rays, and various fish are often spotted while surfing. So the surfing experience can include wildlife sightings as well as waves. El Sunzal was also one of the filming locations for the 1977 surf film “Big Wednesday.” This connection to film adds a cultural perspective to the area’s surf and nature features.
Routes and Getting There
The walk from El Tunco is considered the easiest way to reach El Sunzal. Since the beach can be rocky at certain times of year, take seasonal conditions into account when planning your route.
From San Salvador, the route follows the road to Puerto de La Libertad, the Surf City Bypass, and the coastal road to kilometer 43½. Road layouts can change, so check the route before setting out. The two reference points also differ by starting location: the walking route begins in El Tunco, while the driving route begins in San Salvador.
La Libertad: Archaeology and Activities
If you would also like to explore regional culture and nature, the wider destination of La Libertad offers other attractions. Joya de Cerén preserves the remains of a pre-Hispanic farming village that was buried by a volcanic eruption in the 7th century AD. This offers an archaeological perspective on the region alongside El Sunzal’s surf profile.
Parque de Aventuras Surf City Walter Thilo Deininger was declared a protected area in 2020. Guided tours with specialized guides start there at the Mirador al Pacífico hiking trail; confirm current tour arrangements with the park in advance. The park’s trails include Ruta de la Mariposa and Camino a la Aventura. Availability and trail conditions can change, so check them before your visit.
The Madre Cacao trail is exclusively for mountain biking and trail running. For other activities, the park offers a 270-meter-long zip line at a height of 30 meters; rappelling and Via Ferrata are also available. Since the activities offered may change, confirm current availability directly with the park.
