Metapan between nature, geology and history
Accommodation in Metapan
If you’re looking for a hotel in Metapan, you can choose your destination based on the themes that interest you: historic buildings, geological features or nature experiences. The municipality and the surrounding area of Metapan offer a variety of places to explore.
Geology and experiences in the municipality of Metapan
The Parque Geoturístico El Limo is located in the municipality of Metapan. Its themed museum focuses on the geological and natural history of El Salvador and Central America. Exhibits include fossils in limestone, mineralized wood, and igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks. The collection spans everything from fossilized finds to different types of rock.
There are also a variety of outdoor experiences in the park. Its main attractions include a waterfall reached by a footpath, and rappelling is also offered. Local residents show visitors how to milk a cow and make cheese and quesadillas. If you’re planning to go rappelling or watch these demonstrations, check in advance to see whether they’re currently available.
Hiking destinations in Parque Nacional Montecristo
Another natural area in the municipality is Parque Nacional Montecristo. Its interpretation center shares history through old objects and provides information about the animal species that live there. One hike leads to a waterfall with a pool of cold, clear water, then continues to suspension bridges. The hike thus combines the cold, clear pool at the waterfall with the suspension bridges further along the trail.
Parque Nacional Montecristo also has camping areas and trailheads for hikes to viewpoints, rivers and Jardín de los 100 años. The park is part of the Trifinio transboundary biosphere reserve. If you’re planning to camp, check that the camping areas are currently available before your trip.
Historic buildings and nature at Lago de Güija
Metapan’s historic center is known for its old buildings. Another cultural landmark in the city is Iglesia de San Pedro Apóstol. It was declared a national monument because of its construction, history, style and preserved decorations.
Lago de Güija, shared by El Salvador and Guatemala, is part of the area surrounding Metapan. On the Salvadoran side are the islands of Teotipa, Tule and Iguatepec. Their lush vegetation includes Nance, cedar, Volador, mahogany, Granadillo, rubber trees and Chichipince. The lakeside habitat provides suitable conditions for, among others, quetzals, Cenzontles and American orioles, as well as numerous lizards and snakes, including boas and vipers.
