Trinidad and Tobago is an archipelagic country in the southern Caribbean, northeast of Venezuela and south of Grenada. The country covers 5,128 square kilometres: in addition to the main islands of Trinidad and Tobago, it includes 21 smaller islands. For geographical orientation, the distinction between the main islands is also important: Trinidad is the larger and more populous of the two. This makes it easy to picture the trip as spanning two main islands and an archipelago with many smaller islands.

Rainforest and birdlife in Tobago

The Main Ridge Forest Reserve covers 3,958 hectares of tropical rainforest. It includes lower montane rainforests, lowland rainforests and xerophytic rainforests. Main Ridge extends lengthwise across about two-thirds of Tobago. Its area, extent and different forest types give this natural area several distinctive dimensions: it is both a large rainforest region and a place with varied forest forms.

The rainforest of the Main Ridge Forest Reserve provides a habitat for the rare white-tailed sabrewing (Campylopterus ensipennis), which is endemic to Tobago. The protected area was established by the British in 1776. Its long history and the rainforest’s distinctive wildlife come together in a specific nature experience in Tobago.

Explore reefs and waterfalls

Tropical fish meet a colourful coral reef at Buccoo Reef. You can explore the reef by glass-bottom boat or experience it on a dive. Check before your trip whether an operator is available. This lets you include the activity in your plans without assuming a particular arrangement.

Rio Seco Waterfall in Trinidad is about 30 feet high. A large, deep pool at its base is suitable for swimming. The hike there is considered easy, although the trail can be muddy. Follow local advice and bear in mind that water conditions can vary.

Argyle Falls also has several pools, three of which are surrounded by lush greenery. The hike to the waterfalls takes 15 to 20 minutes from the office. The pools and the time given from the office provide specific points of reference if you are including waterfalls in your trip plans.

Carnival, steelpan and events

The main street parade of Trinidad Carnival takes place on Carnival Monday and Carnival Tuesday; the dates vary from year to year. If you would like to include the parade in your trip plans, check the dates for the relevant year. Even before Carnival, steelpan limes and Panorama competitions are part of the season in Trinidad.

At pan-yard limes, visitors can chat with locals and listen to live steelpan music. These gatherings are seasonal and organised locally. The annual Great Race offers a different focus: the powerboat race starts in Trinidad and ends in Tobago. The 39th edition of the Tobago Heritage Festival, scheduled for 16 July to 1 August 2026, was set to include traditional storytelling, folk music, theatre performances and re-enactments such as the Ole Time Wedding. The parade, music events, race and festival show different sides of the cultural events calendar, without requiring them all to take place during the same travel period.
