Alvarenga is a destination for you if you want your stay to be shaped by river landscapes, trails, geology and cultural heritage. The town lies on the right bank of the Rio Paiva; the Passadiços do Paiva are located in Alvarenga. This combination of river and trails offers a concrete starting point for organizing your travel interests. If you are looking for a hotel in Alvarenga, you can first consider whether hiking, geological sites or historic buildings should be the focus.

Rio Paiva, Passadiços and GR28

The GR28 – Por Montes e Vales runs through the Freguesia de Alvarenga. The Passadiços do Paiva are located in Alvarenga; the GR28 describes a route through the freguesia. This means you can consider a named destination and the route of a trail as different points of reference when planning your trip. Alvarenga also lies on the right bank of the Rio Paiva, which also features in the location of Praia Fluvial da Paradinha: it is in the Freguesia de Alvarenga, on one bank of the river.

Geological formations and their origins

At the Cabanas Longas geosite, rugged quartzite formations stand out. The quartzite rocks formed around 475 million years ago from quartz-rich sands on the seabed. The visible rock formations and their geological history thus offer two different ways to experience the landscape: you can admire the striking reliefs and also learn how far back the geological past reaches.

Pedra Posta is another geological highlight. Located at an altitude of 1,222 metres in the Serra do Montemuro, within the Freguesia de Alvarenga, it features several granitic geomorphological formations. While quartzite is the focus at Cabanas Longas, Pedra Posta is known for its granite formations. Comparing the rocks and landforms brings the geological diversity of these places to life.

History and architectural heritage

On Monte do Senhor dos Aflitos there is a settlement that was probably inhabited during the Bronze Age, around 3,000 years ago. The approximate date and cautious classification go together: they point to a settlement history that reaches far back, but has not been precisely established.

Quinta do Paço was the manor house of the Alvarenga family. It included a palace, a chapel and a tower. Carreira dos Moinhos also tells a story of local architecture: it comprises 17 watermills with waterwheels. The mills are built from schist and roofed with slate. Santuário de Nossa Senhora do Monte has a picnic park and also offers a privileged view of Alvarenga. At the entrance to Aldeia da Paradinha stands a chapel dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Saúde.

Paradinha and local specialities

Aldeia da Paradinha is a remote village in the Freguesia de Alvarenga, in a small valley on the Rio Paiva. The exterior renovation of the houses takes their historic construction and original materials into account: schist, wood and slate. These details give the architecture a distinctive character. They complement the geological themes by showing how local materials are also reflected in architecture.

Local cuisine includes Arouquesa beef steak, served in restaurants in Alvarenga. The PINGUÇA liqueur also comes from Alvarenga and is made with regional products. Restaurant offerings and the availability of the liqueur may vary; ask locally if interested.

These named places and themes offer different points of reference; then tailor your hotel search to your own requirements.
