Arouca offers several clear starting points for planning a trip: trails for walking or cycling, a museum covering natural and cultural history, buildings with a long history, and events with an agricultural focus. If you’re looking for hotels in Arouca, you can first consider whether a route, the area’s heritage or a particular festival is the reason for your trip.

Trails and Landscape

The Ecovia do Arda is just under 11 kilometres long, can be travelled on foot or by bicycle, and starts at Parque da Feira in Vila de Arouca. Along the route, information panels cover the geology, biodiversity and history of this part of the Arouca Geopark, a UNESCO Global Geopark. The Ecovia thus combines a specific route length and a choice of transport with topics explored along the way.

Near Arouca, the 8-kilometre Passadiços do Paiva run between Areinho and Espiunca; their entrances are also in the vicinity of Arouca. The two trails therefore have different points of reference for comparison: the Ecovia is defined by the options of walking or cycling and its starting point in Vila de Arouca, while the Passadiços are defined by the route between two named places. Ticket and access conditions may change. If you plan to visit the Passadiços, check the current conditions before your visit.

Museum and History

The Museu Municipal de Arouca preserves the memories and traditions of a population with a distinctly rural character. It also presents the municipality’s biodiversity and archaeological and geological heritage. In addition to areas for permanent exhibitions, there is an area for temporary exhibitions. The museum therefore features both long-term and changing exhibition formats. In terms of subject matter, it complements the geology, biodiversity and history explored along the Ecovia with archaeology and the memories and traditions of the local population.

The Mosteiro de Santa Maria de Arouca stands on the main street of Vila de Arouca. It has been documented since the 10th century; from 1154 onward, it was used exclusively as a convent for women. Extensive renovations changed the Mosteiro in the 17th and 18th centuries. The Igreja do Mosteiro de Arouca contains paintings, sculptures and richly gilded woodcarvings. The reliquary urn of Santa Mafalda is also housed there.

The construction of the Capela da Misericórdia is dated to 1612 on the basis of an inscription, and is attributed to the faithful at whose initiative it was built. The Calvário comprises six 17th-century crosses that form part of a Way of the Cross; it also offers wide views over Arouca. Here, a specific detail of religious heritage meets a view across the town.

The Casa dos Malafaias consists of sections dating from the 16th and 17th centuries, built mostly from granite. As it is privately owned, it can only be viewed from the outside. This sets it apart from the exhibition spaces and church furnishings described above: for the Casa, the exterior is the available view of the historic building.

Festivals in Arouca

For four days, the Feira das Colheitas brings the centre of Arouca to life with markets, concerts, exhibitions, agricultural competitions, ethnographic and livestock parades, folk performances, children’s activities and food. It was established in 1944 to celebrate and promote agriculture. Its programme thus combines entertainment and exhibitions with the agricultural purpose behind the event.

The Festival da Castanha takes place every year on the last weekend of October. The programme includes food areas, a fair for handicrafts and regional products, workshops, chestnut-roasting events, hiking and cycling activities, and mushroom walks. The activities may vary from one edition to another.
