This puts hiking, history and specific places at the heart of your travel planning.
Hiking the PR 1 CPV “Ilha dos Amores”
The PR 1 CPV “Ilha dos Amores” starts and ends at Cais do Castelo, next to Ilha do Castelo. The island is also popularly known as Ilha dos Amores and is the only island along the Portuguese stretch of the Douro. The trail’s name therefore takes its name from the island’s popular name. The route follows rural and traditional paths through a large part of the Freguesia.
Stops along the trail include Capela de Santo António and Largo Paroquial, where the Velho Cruzeiro de Fornos is located. The route continues to Várzea de Fornos, considered one of the most beautiful landscapes in the Freguesia. From the trail, you can then see Igreja de São Pelágio de Fornos; São Pelágio is also the patron saint of the Freguesia de Fornos. The PR 1 also passes the former Leirós soft-drink factory. The places mentioned offer different points of interest: religious heritage, landscape and a former factory shape the route description.
Trail conditions can vary. Check the current conditions before setting out.
Additional options on PP01 – Fornos
PP01 – Fornos has two additional options, each 1.8 kilometres long. One allows you to visit the rapids of the Rio Paiva; another leads to the abandoned mill at Varzielas. Both options have the same stated distance but different destinations. The deciding factor is whether the rapids or the mill interest you more.
River history and heritage
Lugar do Castelo is also part of the rivers’ history: at the mouth of the Rio Paiva where it meets the Douro, it was an old river port. Archaeological investigations on nearby Ilha do Castelo uncovered the remains of a 15th-century hermitage. These named places therefore bring together river history and a specific archaeological find.
Other historical traces span several centuries. Quinta da Cardia appears to have existed since the 15th century. In the historic settlement of Castelo, you can see some houses from the 19th century. These details add a look at the area’s architectural history to the route’s points of interest, from the apparent long history of the Quinta to the surviving houses from a later century.
Taken together, the hiking options differ in their stated focus: the PR 1 CPV “Ilha dos Amores” passes through a large part of the Freguesia and brings together landscape and heritage, while the additional options on PP01 – Fornos are each 1.8 kilometres long and lead either to the rapids or to the abandoned mill. The river port, island and historic buildings provide distinct themes for your trip to Fornos.
