Estarreja between Lagoon, Nature and Heritage
Accommodation in Estarreja
Eleven esteiros—lagoon channels connected to the Ria de Aveiro and extending inland—shape the landscape in the municipality of Estarreja. They are also important components of the local ecosystem. On the BioRia trails, you’ll encounter wetlands, waterways and a cultural landscape whose history also tells of salt, rice and traditional boatbuilding.
BioRia Trails and Lagoon Landscape
BioRia comprises a network of walking and cycling routes through natural landscapes. The project began in 2005 with the Percurso de Salreu, which was equipped with information panels and visitor facilities. Before setting out, check which of these facilities are currently available. The Centro de Interpretação Ambiental (CIA) is located at the start of the trail and serves as a reference point for the network. Its focus is environmental education and activities related to nature conservation, biodiversity and the municipality’s natural features; the activity programme may change.
The Percurso de Salreu is an eight-kilometre circular route through rice fields, salt marshes, reeds and cattails. The Percurso do Rio AntuĂŁ offers a different route: it starts at the Esteiro de Estarreja, follows the riverbanks for six kilometres and leads to the point where the Rio AntuĂŁ flows into the Ria de Aveiro. The stated distances provide a clear guide when choosing between a circular route and a riverside trail.
The Percurso do Rio Jardim also explores the waterways: it connects the Esteiro de Canelas with the Esteiro de Salreu and follows a U-shaped route along the Rio Jardim. The route begins and ends on a road on the western side, running parallel to the railway line. Dense trees along the riverbanks provide stretches of shade. The Percurso do Rio Gonde starts at Quinta do Marinheiro.
Habitats and Regional Traditions
The Percurso do Bocage follows the Ribeiro de Canelas, a channel of the Ria de Aveiro. Along the way, you’ll see a mosaic of typical habitats; “bocage” here refers to a rural landscape of small plots. The Percurso de Fermelã passes through one such area, divided by living hedgerows and artificial waterways. Marinhoa cattle graze in the fields along the trail. This native breed was once valued for its strength in both farming and hauling the nets used by Arte Xávega fishers.
The reed beds in the municipality’s Baixo-Vouga-Lagunar area provide an important breeding habitat for purple herons, mallards, marsh harriers and small songbirds. The wooded network of channels also supports the presence of otters. Nature and water are also themes of the tourist experiences Estarreja has developed around the Ria.
Salt, Rice and Heritage
In the last century, the historic Esteiro de Estarreja was the Ria de Aveiro’s second-largest salt transshipment point. The Museu Fábrica da História – Arroz offers another glimpse into the region’s working and economic history. It is housed in the ruins of the former Hidro-Eléctrica de Estarreja rice-husking factory, which operated from 1922 until the end of the 1980s. The museum explores rice cultivation in the Baixo Vouga Lagunar, including in Canelas, Fermelã and Salreu, and places agricultural practices in a new context.
A boatbuilding workshop in Pardilhó continues to build traditional wooden boats. These include Moliceiros, Bateiras and boats used for Arte Xávega; painting them is also part of the work. If you plan to visit the workshop, check in advance whether visits are possible. The restored Moinhos de Meias recall the work of millers, who processed grain into flour in the mills.
The Casa-Museu Egas Moniz is the house museum of a Portuguese Nobel laureate: Egas Moniz received the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1949. The collection includes paintings, among them works by D. Carlos de Bragança, Malhoa, JĂşlio Pomar and Abel Salazar, as well as furniture, ceramics, textiles, sculptures and his personal library. The Igreja Matriz de SĂŁo Tiago de BeduĂdo contains a 13th-century inscription and a 15th-century sculpture dedicated to the patron saint. Notable examples of Art Nouveau in the municipality are associated with Ernesto Korrodi, Francisco da Silva Rocha, Jaime Inácio dos Santos and JosĂ© de Pinho.
