Maritime history, porcelain culture and routes along the Ria give Ilhavo a varied visitor appeal. Two channels of the Ria de Aveiro cross the municipality of Ílhavo: the Canal de Mira and the Canal de Ílhavo, also known as the Rio Bôco. Museums tell the stories of cod fishing and porcelain; routes take you through varied landscapes on foot, by bike or on the water. When planning your trip, you can prioritise these themes according to your interests.

Maritime history and porcelain culture

The Navio-Museu Santo André was part of Portugal’s cod fishing fleet. In August 2001, the ship began a new chapter as an illustration of trawling methods for cod and a tribute to the memory of its crew, who served aboard for almost half a century. Its story therefore centres on work at sea and remembrance of the crew.

The Museu Marítimo de Ílhavo offers guided tours for groups of 15 or more. These must be arranged in advance and confirmed by the museum. If you are planning a group tour, arrange and confirm the date ahead of time.

The Centro de Religiosidade Marítima is Portugal’s first museum centre dedicated to maritime religiosity. Religious art and cultural objects there illustrate the relationship between the people of Ílhavo and the sea. The Aquário dos Bacalhaus offers a different experience: its circular route takes you progressively closer to the fish.

The Museu da Vista Alegre is housed in a former workshop wing within the Vista Alegre porcelain factory complex. Its porcelain collection documents the company’s technological and artistic development throughout its history. The Capela da Vista Alegre, which contains the tomb of D. Manuel de Moura Manuel, Bishop of Miranda, is classified as a National Monument of Portugal.

A two-hour guided walk in Costa Nova explores the importance of seafood in the Ria de Aveiro, the Mercado do Peixe and the social history of the local population. Check the availability of this experience before booking.

Routes along the Ria and on the water

The Frente Ria Costa Nova–Vagueira is both an ecological trail and a cycle route. It connects the beaches of Costa Nova with Praia da Vagueira and runs along the Canal de Mira, crossing the municipal boundary between Ílhavo and Vagos. The route offers a chance to experience the natural assets of the Ria de Aveiro Special Protection Area within the Natura 2000 network, designated under the Birds Directive.

The Caminho do Praião runs between Gafanha da Encarnação and Gafanha do Carmo. It is 5.5 km long as an ecological trail and 6 km as a cycle route. Facilities include five rest areas, a birdwatching point, several environmental information and awareness panels, and mooring buoys for small boats.

For a leg on the water, Section K of the Grande Rota da Ria de Aveiro is suitable for canoeing and kayaking. The route runs between the Ponte de Fareja in Vagos and the Ponte da Vista Alegre. The Trilho Pedestre Entre a Ria e a Floresta nature trail offers a different perspective on the surroundings: it follows the banks of the Ria, passes through the Mata Nacional and ends at the former agricultural colony.

The 11-hectare Jardim Oudinot has a recreational marina, walking paths, a cycle route and a picnic area. It also has sports courts for football, basketball and tennis, as well as children’s playgrounds.

Visiting and getting around

Built in 1929, the Casa Gafanhoa is an example of a regional type of rural farmhouse. Its listed spaces include a courtyard and granary, as well as stables, bedrooms, living and dining rooms, and kitchens for everyday cooking and baking. The tourism offices of the municipality of Ílhavo offer tips for planning your visit and local handicrafts. Bus routes connect Costa Nova with Ílhavo, as well as with Aveiro and the beaches. As routes and timetables are important for planning your specific trip, check the latest information before travelling.
