Palmaz: Heritage and Trails along the Caima River
Accommodation in Palmaz
Palmaz is surrounded by mountains and shaped by natural landscapes. Places of interest include chapels and a bridge; in Vilarinho de São Luís, rural granaries and local traditions also shape the character of the area. Walking is another part of life along the Caima River. This combination of landscape, village history, and riverside scenery gives you several specific points of interest for a stay.
Chapels, a Church, and Industrial History
The municipality lists the Capela de São João, the Igreja Matriz de Palmaz, and the Ponte Setecentista as places of interest in Palmaz. In Ferreiros, the Capela de Nossa Senhora do Bom Despacho was built in 1972. This date gives the chapel a specific historical reference; the three places mentioned add a church, a chapel, and a bridge to the picture.
Industrial history is also marked by a distinctive change of use: the Fábrica de Papel do Caima reused buildings from a textile factory that operated in the second half of the 19th century. The date refers to the operation of the textile factory, not to the founding of the paper mill. This sequence is particularly interesting for understanding the site: textile production was followed by paper manufacturing in the same buildings.
Rural Heritage and Traditions in Vilarinho de São Luís
The rural centre of Vilarinho de S. Luís has remained relatively intact compared with other settlements in the municipality. It is home to numerous espigueiros, raised granaries traditionally used to store grain and other goods. The short Percurso dos Espigueiros trail introduces visitors to preserved espigueiros and local community traditions. It links an explanation of their former storage function with a trail that also explores the community’s heritage.
The Capela de Vilarinho de São Luís is the focal point of the village’s patron saint festival, held on the last Sunday in August. If this date is important to your trip, check the event date in advance. Another local tradition takes place in December: the Associação Tradições Vilarinho de São Luís organises the slaughter of a pig, followed by a Rejoada. Both customs mark different occasions in the annual calendar, but this does not imply that visitors can take part.
Trails along the Caima River
The Margens do Rio Caima project, described in 2012, included a circular trail of about 2.3 kilometres along both banks. The project also included access to various habitats, tree nurseries, and lagoons, as well as a picnic area and a car park. Before using the trail, check the route details and the condition of the facilities on site.
In Palmaz, a footpath of about three kilometres runs along the Caima River between the former Fábrica de Papel do Caima and the weir at Areínho. Its approximate length and named endpoints provide clear orientation. As no assurance is given about its current maintenance, it is advisable to check trail conditions before setting out.
