Ovar can be explored through several distinct themes: a coastal lagoon, opportunities for wildlife observation and an Atlantic-shaped coastline sit alongside religious architecture, tile art and a fine cake with a name of its own. The story of Júlio Dinis is another specific point of interest. The landscape, buildings and food culture each reveal a different side of the destination.

Lagoon, wildlife watching and trails

Barrinha de Esmoriz, also known as Lagoa de Paramos, is a rare medium-sized coastal lagoon between the municipalities of Espinho and Ovar. An approximately 6 km-long boardwalk runs along the lagoon. The alternative name is useful for finding your way, as both names refer to the same coastal lagoon. The approximate length also gives a concrete sense of the boardwalk's scale.

At Parque Ambiental do Buçaquinho, there are observation points and an observation tower from which various bird and amphibian species can be watched. The focus here is on the observation facilities and the groups of animals. Another reference point for planning by trail length is the route from Cais do Carregal to Cais da Tijosa in Ovar, which is 5.5 km long. The figures are close when compared directly: about 6 km for the boardwalk and 5.5 km for this route. The boardwalk's length is explicitly an estimate.

Coast and water

CENÁRIO – Centro Náutico da Ria de Ovar offers recreational boat trips. Strong Atlantic surf shapes the beach at Praia do Furadouro. Depending on the season, it is known as a beach for fishermen or surfers. The two names indicate the beach's changing character through the seasons, while the surf is a constant feature of its coastal setting.

Praia do Furadouro is about 3 km from Ovar and can be reached by bicycle via the cycle path. For planning a cycling trip, both the approximate distance and the cycle-path connection are specified. The coast thus brings together two distinct themes: the beach's seasonal associations and the option of reaching it by bicycle via the cycle path.

Passos, museum and tile art

The Passos de Ovar form an urban Way of the Cross with five stations integrated into the city. The complex includes the Chapel of Pretório, beside the side façade of the parish church, and the Chapel of Calvário. The term Way of the Cross here therefore refers not to a single building, but to a complex with several stations and chapels. The present-day complex was built between 1747 and 1756.

Another historical trace leads to the Júlio Dinis Museum. It is housed in Casa dos Campos, a typical vareiro house where the writer lived in 1863. The dates provide different points of reference: the Passos belong to an 18th-century complex, while Júlio Dinis's life in the house is associated with the year 1863.

Ovar's tile heritage includes a variety of façades and ornaments decorated with Azulejos, dating from the 19th and 20th centuries. The Azulejo project covers Largo Mouzinho de Albuquerque, Largo da Família Soares Pinto and Praça da República. This distinguishes the tile heritage as a broader design theme from the three squares specifically included in the project.

Pão de Ló de Ovar

Local food culture also has a clearly identified specialty: Pão de Ló de Ovar is a fine cake made with eggs, especially egg yolks, sugar and flour. Its crumb is light, creamy, airy and yellow; the crust is slightly moist and golden brown. The ingredients, crumb and crust describe the specialty from several angles: the ingredients identify its basis, while its color and texture characterize the cake in more detail. Pão de Ló de Ovar is therefore not just a name for a sweet treat, but also a specific combination of a light crumb and a golden-brown crust.
