Sever do Vouga: Water, Routes and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Sever Do Vouga
Sever do Vouga can be discovered through a wide range of attractions: rivers and waterfalls sit alongside archaeological remains, historic buildings and routes along former railway lines. When planning your trip, it is worth first deciding whether you want to focus on nature and waterscapes or primarily on cultural history. Sever do Vouga is one of the seven municipalities that make up the Montanhas Mágicas region.
Rivers, routes and waterfalls
The municipal Ecopista do Vouga follows a former section of the Vouga railway line along the Vouga River, from the mouth of the Rio Mau to the Cedrim stop. Both the former railway line and the river shape the route.
At the Cabreia Waterfall, the Rio Mau plunges down a rocky slope. The waterfall is in the municipality of Silva Escura; a walking trail leads there and to some mills. Praia Fluvial da Quinta do Barco is a different kind of waterside destination for swimming. The water quality is rated excellent for the bathing season; check current seasonal operating conditions before your visit.
The free-flowing Vouga forms rapids, temporary islands, backwaters, beaches and pools. Well-preserved riverside galleries support great biological diversity. The stretch below the Ponte de Pessegueiro bridge has been designated a Site of Community Importance to protect migratory fish species. The Couto de Esteves/Ribeiradio reservoir offers a different waterscape: it extends for about 14 kilometres through scenic valleys and is suitable for canoeing. The river and reservoir thus differ both in their landscapes and in the water-based activities mentioned.
At the Gresso Waterfall and along the Gresso Escarpment Walkway, the trail leads to a mountain stream that is a tributary of the Vouga. The Gresso trail passes through shaded woodland with dense riverside vegetation. The Fílveda Waterfall plunges down in several cascades over a distance of more than 40 metres. Over a river stretch of about 200 metres, its total height difference is 75 metres: these figures describe the cascades and the height difference across a longer stretch. At the Carrazedo Waterfall, a small pool forms beside a series of mills; the spot is considered a good option for a family walk.
Archaeology and architectural history
The ruins of Castro de Cedrim, also known as Povoado de Castêlo, lie on a spur-shaped platform in the Serra das Talhadas. Remains of a Cyclopean wall have been preserved at the site. The Anta da Cerqueira, also known as Anta da Pedra Moura, represents a different historical period. This approximately 5,000-year-old passage dolmen is located in the Serra do Arestal, is considered the area's best-preserved example of megalithic architecture, and is classified as a Property of Public Interest.
The Poço de S. Tiago Bridge combines engineering history with scenic views: it is about 28.5 metres high, has twelve arches and was completed in 1913 for the new Vouga Valley railway. The bridge offers panoramic views of the Vouga and its natural surroundings. The Sever do Vouga pillory stands in the square in front of the old prison in the town centre. As a symbol, it recalls the municipal authority established by the charter granted by King Manuel I in 1514. The bridge and the pillory thus represent different historical themes: railway construction on the one hand, and municipal legal history on the other.
The Via Romana da Ereira is also part of the history of old transport routes; it formed part of the connection between Viseu and the Olisipo–Bracara Augusta road. Forno dos Moiros is a rock with engravings, probably dating back to the Bronze Age. Alongside the prominent buildings, these remains add an archaeological dimension to the area's cultural history.
